Pharmacy students given preference.)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h3>Detailed Course Description<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Activities\/Class format<\/strong><br \/>\nThis 3-credit course will utilize a combination of didactic lectures, required readings, research and presentation, as well as hearing summaries.<br \/>\n<strong>Didactic lectures<\/strong><br \/>\nFor each class there will be a brief lecture of the weekly topic, which will be followed by class discussion in which the class is expected to participate and demonstrate familiarity with the readings.\u00a0 Guest lecturers related to the topic of the week will be invited to speak in approximately half of the classes.<br \/>\n<strong>Required readings<\/strong><br \/>\nThe assigned readings will average 50 pages per week with a greater emphasis in the beginning of the class.\u00a0 Students are expected to do the readings before class.\u00a0 While it is not expected that the student have a command of the specific weekly topic, it is expected that the student have a grasp of the fundamental ideas and concepts of the readings in order to be an active participant in class discussion.\u00a0 Two\u00a0 pop quizzes will be given on the readings.<br \/>\n<strong>Presentation and Research Paper<\/strong><br \/>\nThe culmination of the course will be oral and written testimony before a \u201cpseudo\u201d Congressional health care committee.\u00a0 Students will present five minutes of oral testimony and be prepared to answer questions from a panel of \u201clegislators\u201d.\u00a0 Hearing summaries are expected to last no longer than one hour.\u00a0 A 2-3 page written summary will be expected one week before testimony is scheduled.\u00a0 All students will be required to submit a more extensive 20-25 page written testimony due the week of finals.<br \/>\n<strong>Hearing summaries<\/strong><br \/>\nStudents will be required to attend (or watch on television or the Internet) and write a 2-4 page summary of two health related hearings.\u00a0 Preferably one in the Senate and one in the House of Representatives.<br \/>\n<strong>Grading<\/strong><br \/>\nStudents grades will be based on class participation (20%); quizzes (10%); hearing summaries (30%); final oral Congressional testimony (20%) and final written Congressional testimony (20%).<br \/>\n<strong>Learning Objectives<\/strong><br \/>\nFoster the student\u2019s ability to think critically and practically about the relationship between policy making and application of statutory and regulatory provisions in federal and state law to the delivery of health care; (2) to give the student a historical perspective of the current relationship between the significance of various special interest groups and how the health care policy agenda is developed; (3) to provide the student with practical experience in understanding the Congressional legislative process, the critical components necessary to access policy questions and the likelihood of legislative action on the national and state political agendas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Credits 3 credits Coordinator\/Primary Instructor Dr. Elaina Goldstein, JD, MPA Semester offered Spring Catalog Description This class will examine the distinction and the relationship between health care policy, legislation and regulation at the federal and state levels of government.\u00a0 It will specifically compare the Congressional health care reform efforts of the Clinton Administration and the [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":639,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"categories":[62,68],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-3969","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-prof-electives","category-prof-electives-notoffer"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/pharmacy\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3969","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/pharmacy\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/pharmacy\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/pharmacy\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/639"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/pharmacy\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=3969"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/pharmacy\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3969\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/pharmacy\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=3969"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/pharmacy\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=3969"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/pharmacy\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=3969"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
