Catalog Description<\/strong><\/td>\n <\/td>\nAn introduction to epidemiology, the study of health and disease in populations.  Epidemiologic methods and research design for conducting and interpreting health research.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Detailed Course Description<\/h3>\n

The specific objectives for this course are:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. To provide students with an understanding of the basic principles and methodology of epidemiology.<\/li>\n
  2. To familiarize students with the process of public health research (i.e. hypothesis generation, literature review, study design, evaluation, etc.)<\/li>\n
  3. To introduce students to common epidemiological study designs and provide a basic understanding of the strengths, weaknesses and common applications for each of these study designs.<\/li>\n
  4. To familiarize students with sources of bias that may influence the validity of epidemiological research.<\/li>\n
  5. To discuss the application of epidemiological research to areas of public health, health services research, outcomes research and related areas.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Activities\/Class format
    \n<\/strong>This class utilizes a combination of lecture and discussion in a small seminar format.  Students are expected to read original studies and critique them in class.  The class meets once per week.   During the first 1-2 hours, new material is presented, followed by discussion of problem sets and readings.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
