{"id":47381,"date":"2021-05-03T14:08:27","date_gmt":"2021-05-03T18:08:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/pharmacy\/?p=47381"},"modified":"2021-05-04T09:49:54","modified_gmt":"2021-05-04T13:49:54","slug":"uri-pharmacy-students-professors-vaccinate-hundreds-at-westerly-senior-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/pharmacy\/2021\/05\/03\/uri-pharmacy-students-professors-vaccinate-hundreds-at-westerly-senior-center\/","title":{"rendered":"URI Pharmacy students, professors vaccinate hundreds at Westerly Senior Center"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/pharmacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">URI College of Pharmacy<\/a> faculty, staff and students have been making a difference on the front lines of the pandemic from the beginning, and that continues as the COVID-19 vaccination effort shifts from larger clinics to more targeted areas to reach populations that have not yet been vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p>Students Melissa Gianetti and Yan Cen have been helping get shots in arms at the Westerly Senior Center. The pair joined URI Clinical Assistant Professor Britny Brown at the center May 3, drawing up vaccinations for use that day. She has been administering vaccines at <a href=\"https:\/\/asthenisusa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Asthenis Pharmacy<\/a> in Central Falls, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aplacetobehealthy.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clinica Esperanza<\/a> in Providence and at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.providence.va.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Providence VA Medical Center<\/a>, in addition to the Westerly Senior Center. She also works at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenlineapothecary.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Green Line Apothecary<\/a> in Wakefield and helps patients with transition of care at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southcountyhealth.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South County Hospital<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish I knew the exact number, but I\u2019ve definitely administered more than 1,000 vaccinations,\u201d Gianetti said. \u201cSometimes it seems like the only thing I do is vaccines; I even dream about vaccines. While they previously encountered greater demand than supply, they now find themselves limiting the number of shots they prepare so as not to waste vaccines that have a short shelf life. Part of the reason is that many Rhode Islanders have already gotten the shot, but vaccine hesitancy still plays a role. Experiential education has been a big part of Cen\u2019s and Gianetti\u2019s time at URI, helping both land post-graduate residencies at medical centers in Illinois and Vermont, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cURI has been wonderful setting up experiences like this,\u201d Gianetti said. \u201cI\u2019ve learned so much from doing these clinical rotations.
