New pharmacy students receive white coats, take the Oath of a Pharmacist<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy Class of 2029 was officially welcomed into the profession on Sept. 26 as students donned their white coats for the first time, ceremonially beginning their professional years as pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists in training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pharmacy Dean Kerry LaPlante greeted students and their families in a packed Edwards Auditorium Friday afternoon, welcoming them into their first professional year of pharmacy education after spending the previous two years completing general education studies. The college offers students a unique 0-6 program, allowing them to complete their undergraduate studies and earn a Doctor of Pharmacy degree in just six years without having to reapply to graduate school.<\/p>\n\n\n

LaPlante was joined by URI Provost Barbara Wolfe, former dean of the URI College of Nursing, and URI President Marc Parlange, who greeted the students after grabbing some of his own photos of them from the podium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the students crossed the stage to receive their white lab coats, URI pharmacy Clinical Professor Kelly Matson led them in their first recitation of the Oath of a Pharmacist, which reads:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI promise to devote myself to a lifetime of service to others through the profession of pharmacy. In fulfilling this vow:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI will consider the welfare of humanity and relief of suffering my primary concerns.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI will promote inclusion, embrace diversity, and advocate for justice to advance health equity.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cI will apply my knowledge, experience and skills to the best of my ability to assure optimal outcomes for all patients.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI will accept the responsibility to improve my professional knowledge, expertise and self-awareness.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI will hold myself and my colleagues to the highest principles of our profession\u2019s moral, ethical and legal conduct.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI will embrace and advocate changes that improve patient care.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI will utilize my knowledge, skills, experiences and values to prepare the next generation of pharmacists.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI take these vows voluntarily with the full realization of the responsibility with which I am entrusted by the public.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
