{"id":5562,"date":"2009-05-04T17:18:38","date_gmt":"2009-05-04T17:18:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/pharmacy\/?p=5562"},"modified":"2009-05-04T17:18:38","modified_gmt":"2009-05-04T17:18:38","slug":"uri-college-of-pharmacy-professors-win-national-teaching-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/pharmacy\/2009\/05\/04\/uri-college-of-pharmacy-professors-win-national-teaching-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"URI College of Pharmacy professors win national teaching competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>KINGSTON, R.I. \u2013 May 4, 2009 \u2013 Three University of Rhode Island pharmacy professors are celebrating the University\u2019s first victory in the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Innovations in Teaching Competition.<br \/>\nClinical Assistant Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/pharmacy\/meet\/erica-estus\/\">Erica Estus<\/a> of Wakefield, and Professors Anne Hume of Portsmouth and Norma Owens of Providence received the award for their work in a professional level elective course offered at URI since the fall of 2007. The class, \u201cAdvanced Pharmacotherapy in Geriatrics,\u201d covers broad issues in pharmacotherapy for older persons, such as age-related physiologic changes.<br \/>\n\u201cThe elective emphasizes innovative active learning strategies and diverse teaching methods to engage pharmacy students,\u201d said Estus on the award application. \u201cThe results demonstrate a significant improvement in knowledge, aging perceptions, and ability to communicate with older adults.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe purposes of the Innovations in Teaching Competition are to identify innovative teaching and learning strategies and assessment methods. The competition provides an opportunity to engage faculty in a process of documenting their scholarly approach to teaching and learning,\u201d said Jennifer Patton, director of institutional research and data systems for the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.<br \/>\nFor winning, the pharmacy professors will have the opportunity to present their work during the association\u2019s annual meeting, which will take place from July 18 to 22 in Boston.<br \/>\nThough URI has not won the competition before, it has been recognized in the past.
