Automated systems for distribution and physician order entry have begun to transform the role of the pharmacist. This 3-credit elective course will provide PharmD students an in-depth understanding of institutional pharmacy practice. Current hospital pharmacy pharmacists will provide the comprehensive curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>It is the intent of this course to provide the foundation necessary for students to enter a hospital practice environment and have a clear understanding of the different departments and roles a pharmacist may participate in to effectively care for patients.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Activities\/Class Format<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Didactic lectures<\/em><br \/>\nLectures will be given by current hospital pharmacists throughout the state of Rhode Island and will cover topics related to the practice of pharmacy in a hospital setting. Examples of topics covered in the past have been pediatric pharmacotherapy, formulary systems, technology in health systems, and transplant pharmacy.<\/p>\n<p><em>Final Group Presentation<\/em><br \/>\nYou will be assigned a group to work on a final presentation, which will be presented toward the end of the course. The presentation will simulate a presentation to a hospital pharmacy and therapeutics committee. The presentation will be approximately 30 minutes in length and cover topics related to the implementation of a novel program for a health system.<\/p>\n<p><em>Clinical Presentation<\/em><br \/>\nA presentation on a clinic topic related to hospital pharmacy will be completed as part of this course.
