Detailed Course Description<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pharmacy practice in health systems has undergone profound and dynamic changes recently. Automated systems for distribution and physician order entry have begun to transform the role of the pharmacist. This 3-credit elective course will provide PharmD students an in-depth understanding of institutional pharmacy practice. Current hospital pharmacy pharmacists will provide the comprehensive curriculum.<\/p>\n

It is the intent of this course to provide the foundation necessary for students to enter a hospital practice environment and have a clear understanding of the different departments and roles a pharmacist may participate in to effectively care for patients.<\/p>\n

Activities\/Class Format<\/strong><\/p>\n

Didactic lectures<\/em>
\nLectures will be given by current hospital pharmacists throughout the state of Rhode Island and will cover topics related to the practice of pharmacy in a hospital setting. Examples of topics covered in the past have been pediatric pharmacotherapy, formulary systems, technology in health systems, and transplant pharmacy.<\/p>\n

Final Group Presentation<\/em>
\nYou will be assigned a group to work on a final presentation, which will be presented toward the end of the course. The presentation will simulate a presentation to a hospital pharmacy and therapeutics committee. The presentation will be approximately 30 minutes in length and cover topics related to the implementation of a novel program for a health system.<\/p>\n

Clinical Presentation<\/em>
\nA presentation on a clinic topic related to hospital pharmacy will be completed as part of this course. This will be an evidence-based presentation utilizing medical literature.<\/p>\n

\nLearning Objectives:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

  • Understand and define the different roles a pharmacist may have in a hospital setting, along with current and contemporary issues that dictate practice in the institutional setting including automation, medication safety, formulary management, and antibiotic stewardship.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Discuss the role of the joint commission and its specific requirements for pharmacy practice in the hospital.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Discuss and understand the roles of specialty clinical pharmacists in the health systems, specifically internal medicine, critical care, oncology, transplant, psychiatry, and pediatrics\/neonatology.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Describe the role for the pharmacist in sterile product preparation and the laws and regulations governing the preparation of these products, specifically USP 797.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Describe the concept of the patient centered medical home and understand how transitions of care affect the health care system.<\/span>
