Evaluating a patient’s current medication list prior to conception allows pharmacists to identify potential teratogens, recommend safer alternatives, and collaborate with other healthcare providers to optimize therapy. Women who are planning pregnancy or are in early pregnancy frequently seek guidance from their healthcare team regarding the safety of their medications. Given that a full-term pregnancy lasts approximately nine months, many women will encounter seasonal respiratory viruses, particularly during peak circulation in colder months. This often leads to questions about how to safely manage symptoms such as cough, congestion, fever, and sore throat while minimizing risk to the fetus.

Target Audience

Pharmacists in all practice settings.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, pharmacists will be able to:

Determine the appropriate type and amount of vitamins and minerals required for a patient preconception.

Employ evidence-based literature to support recommendations for changing health maintenance medications to safer alternatives during pregnancy.

Appraise current literature to assist in recommending care measures for pregnant women experiencing respiratory viruses.

Describe vaccines recommended for pregnant women to help prevent respiratory illness.

Accreditation Statement

The University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.

This application-based program will provide 1.0 Contact Hour (0.1 CEU) for pharmacists.

UAN: 0060-0000-26-029-L01-P
Release Date: June 17, 2026
Expiration Date: June 17, 2027

ACPE

Technology

A mobile device or computer with an internet connection is required.

Speaker

Jamie N.
