This 90-minute session brings together primary care providers, specialists, public health professionals, and other healthcare stakeholders to explore barriers to screening, effective documentation practices, and strategies to improve access and follow-up care.

Through a moderated panel discussion featuring clinical experts and community health advocates, participants will learn to apply evidence-based workflows, utilize 2022 Lung-RADS coding for CT reporting, and successfully implement smoking history documentation as part of the lung cancer screening process. This activity also addresses interdisciplinary collaboration and innovative solutions to provider shortages, such as leveraging electronic health records and care navigation.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for primary care professionals, physicians, physician associates, nurses, community health education specialists, social workers, licensed mental health counselors, respiratory therapists, tobacco treatment specialists, and other allied members of the healthcare team caring for patients at risk for lung cancer due to current or former heavy smoking histories.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, learners will be able to:

Identify the barriers to lung cancer screening in Rhode Island.

Contrast evidence-based methods that facilitate lung cancer screening completion for eligible patients.

Describe methods to improve referral systems to pulmonology.

Classify the use of lung rads 2022 codes for lung cancer screening CT reporting and recommendations.

Summarize the impact that smoking cessation can have on cancer incidence and mortality.

Understand the importance of documenting smoking history properly and encouraging smoking cessation regularly.

Technology

A mobile device or computer with an internet connection is required.

Panel Members

Terrance Healey, MD – Director of Thoracic Radiology, Rhode Island Hospital; Rhode Island Medical Imaging
Hina Khan, MD – Thoracic Oncologist, Brown University Health
Paul Larson, MD, MBA – Medical Director, Brown University Health Primary Care
Andrew Foderaro, MD – Pulmonologist, Brown University Health
Robert Smith, PhD – Senior Vice President, Early Cancer Detection Science, American Cancer Society; Principal Investigator, National Lung Cancer Screening Roundtable
Cheryl Ferreira, BSN-RN, BA, BS, US Department of Veteran’s Affairs

Agenda

Welcome (Terrance Healey, MD)

Lung Cancer Screening: The Importance of Smoking Cessation and Non-Smoking Risk Factors (Robert Smith, PhD)

Roundtable Discussion & Call to Action Summary (Moderator: Terrance Healey, MD)

Hina Khan, MD/BVCHC: FQHC model program – Survivor story

Paul Larson, MD, MBA: Using EHR to document need for screening, importance of documenting accurate smoking history, importance of HEDIS measure for LCS

Terrance Healey, MD: Training RIMI staff, making sure diagnostic results are accompanied by next step providers

Cheryl Ferreira, BSN-RN, BA, BS: Lung nodule clinic and triage in hospital setting

Andrew Foderaro, MD: Ways to circumnavigate pulmonology shortage

Reaction & Questions from Robert Smith, PhD

Q&A

About this Activity

Medical Learning Institute Inc, University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy, and the Partnership to Reduce Cancer in Rhode Island are responsible for the selection of this activity’s topics, the preparation of editorial content, and the distribution of this CE activity.
