The URI Plastics REU team took action against ocean pollution with a coastal cleanup at Black Point Trail in Narragansett!
Guided by URI GSO alum Dr. Victoria Fulfer, Microplastics Scientist at 5 Gyres, Plastics REU students used 5 Gyres’ TrashBlitz app to collect and log data about the debris they removed from the shoreline. Exact geolocation is attached to data and then used to create a map of the trash found. This important information helps track plastic pollution and supports advocacy efforts for real environmental change.
By the end of the TrashBlitz, Plastics REU students had logged 450 items and removed them from the shoreline. The most common items found were cigarette butts, food wrappers, bottle caps, and bottles. The group ended the day with a picnic lunch at Scarborough North State Beach.
