This requires being in touch with your career goals and aspirations, your skills, values and preferences, and what your most inspiring and rewarding activities, experiences and mentor relationships have been to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A strong sense of self, the ability to reflect on what you bring to the table, what your experiences say about you, and how you\u2019ll put your abilities to work in a health professions setting will help you immensely in finding the right place to continue your educational journey (to engage in self-reflection, review the prompts about the core competencies and personal statement).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\"><div class=\"cl-wrapper cl-card-wrapper\"><a class=\"cl-card  \" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/prehealth\/professions\/\" title=\"\"><div class=\"cl-card-container media\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/prehealth\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1746\/Roosevelt-sunset.jpg\" srcset=\"\" alt=\"\"><\/div><div class=\"cl-card-container text\"><div class=\"cl-card-text\"><h2>Prepare<\/h2><p>Before understanding how to choose a program, prepare by gaining experiences that will help you to understand more about the provider you want to be, and the profession you want to pursue.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"cl-card-container button\">be a competetive applicant<\/div><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Factors to Consider: <\/h2>\n\n\n<section class=\"cl-wrapper cl-tabs-wrapper\"><div class=\"cl-tabs  \">\n<section class=\"cl-tab \"><h1>Location<\/h1>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In-state vs. out-of-state\/public vs. private:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Historically, the national data as a trend of state schools taking a majority of in-state residents\u2014for example, University of Connecticut School of Medicine typically accepts around 80% Connecticut residents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Private institutions do not have strong preferences for students from a particular state or country.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When considering location, it\u2019s also important to think not just about where you\u2019d like to study, but also where you\u2019d like to complete your residency\u2014look into where students are placed and what community aspects appeal to you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/section>\n\n<section class=\"cl-tab \"><h1>Mission Statement<\/h1>\n\n<p>Does the school\u2019s mission statement match your interests and strengths?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Most schools will have a clear focus on one or a few key aspects of health care. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For instance, institutions might show a dedication to research, innovation and technological progress, service to particular communities (e.g. underserved communities or rural communities), or student involvement in teaching. It is important to get a sense of what the schools prioritize and how that aligns with your goals and values.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To view a consolidated list of all mission statements for MD schools, visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/students-residents.aamc.org\/media\/6966\/download#:~:text=CA%20University%20of%20California%2C%20San,our%20region%20and%20the%20nation.\">MSAR Mission Statement Report<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/section>\n\n<section class=\"cl-tab \"><h1>Pedagogy and Grading System<\/h1>\n\n<p>When making your decisions, consider what your personal learning style is and what the best environment is for you and your academic preferences:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Think about each school\u2019s teaching techniques, core curriculum, electives and typical weekly schedule.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider other aspects such as what clinical practice will look like, if there are any special program tracks you can take advantage of, and what your access to advising\/mentorship will be.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The grading system is also something to take into account when deciding on schools\u2014work will either be on a graded or pass\/fail basis. Evaluate which is more appealing to you in terms of the kind of learning atmosphere that is created and what you\u2019ll get out of your education.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/section>\n\n<section class=\"cl-tab \"><h1>Involvement<\/h1>\n\n<p>As most pre-professional students are very involved both inside and outside of the classroom, it is important to explore the ways you will be able to remain engaged throughout your continuing education. By considering what special programs a school offers, what affiliations they have with other organizations in the community, and what kinds of clubs are available, you\u2019ll be able to get a sense of what you can become involved with to supplement your studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do your best to get a sense of what kinds of students matriculate to which schools and how that creates a certain culture among the student body. Your cohort will not only be your peers but your colleagues as well, so trying to gauge how you\u2019ll fit in is important.
