Thoughtful reflection and clear storytelling are just as important as strong writing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\"><section class=\"cl-wrapper cl-boxout-wrapper\"><div class=\"cl-boxout  \"><h1>Personal Statement Writing Workshop(s)<\/h1>\n\n<p>Pre-Health Career Pathways collaborates with URI\u2019s Writing Center to host workshops late in the Fall semester on writing an effective Personal Statement. <\/p>\n\n\n<a class=\"cl-button  \" href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1fzc14GpKCofWBUNXyk6WT9MZoecjsF54\/view?usp=sharing\" title=\"\">see the slides<\/a>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key points to discuss in your personal statement:&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Personal qualities: key strengths in the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/prehealth\/pre-health-competencies\/\">core competencies<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Preparation: what experiences have you learned from along the way<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Motivation: preparation and desire for pursuing medicine (<strong>this is important<\/strong>. You should answer: why medicine\/dental\/PA in your personal statement).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vision: impact you wish to make in the field and your goals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Questions you might answer in your personal statement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Why did you choose medicine as a career?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What was the turning point in your life, or the collection of key experiences, that let you know that this health profession was your career of choice?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give an example of a big challenge you\u2019ve faced and how you resolved it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What people most influenced your life and why?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What are your future goals and why?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Organization<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Background information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your values<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your interest in medicine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any personal events<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other work experiences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any influential incidents that have shaped your life<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any challenges you have overcome<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Start early and revise often: this process will take time and a number of revisions along the way. Give yourself enough time to edit without feeling overwhelmed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tell a story, but instead of focusing on the \u201cwhat\u201d, lean into the \u201cso, what?\u201d<\/strong> Why was this impactful for you in deciding that you wanted to pursue this career?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use first-person voice (\u201cI\u201d, \u201cmy\u201d, \u201cme\u201d)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep it simple: use only vivid details and the strongest, most appropriate stories<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Show, don\u2019t tell: display to the committee that you possess a certain quality or strength; show what\u2019s happening with gripping verbs and images<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Include thoughts and feelings: stand out to the committee by being interesting and engaging in your writing as you make the personal connection between you and medicine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Develop a strong idea or element of your story and weave it throughout: try to make a theme to tie your experiences together and unify your story<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seek as much feedback as you can: have multiple people review your personal statement, including people who know you well, individuals who know the health professions field, and others who may be able to provide external, objective feedback<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don\u2019t:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use cliches: avoid generalities such as a \u201cdesire to help people\u201d or a \u201cfascination with science\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Re-list activities: the committee has seen your work and activities already; use this opportunity to focus on noteworthy and specific aspects of your involvement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Focus too heavily on high school experiences: while these can shape your interests, committees will want to understand your mature decisions for pursuing a health career<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be too self-congratulatory or self-deprecating: acknowledge you successes as well as your failures, but do not focus on them<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get caught up in the style at first: you will go through many drafts of your statement, so start with getting thoughts down on paper and go back later to refine the style<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Speak in too many scientific terms. Most members of any admissions committee are not scientists.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Resources<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The process of reflecting on your experiences, drafting different versions of your story, and refining your statement to tell your story in the most compelling way takes time and effort.
