We collaborate with the USDA National Arboretum, the Landscape Plant Development Center, and J.F. Schmidt & Sons Nursery,. the Rhode Island Nursery and Landscape Association, New England Nursery Association, and the Horticulture Research Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A long history<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
The Skogley Memorial Turfgrass Research Facility contains some of the oldest agricultural research plots in continual use within the United States.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n
Our work focusses on sustainable landscape management through the maintenance of habitat for pollinators, and contributing to horticultural knowledge in the community. We share research on wild plants ecology, plant propagation, arboriculture, landscape plants, and field botany and taxonomy with the local community through the URI Cooperative extension as well as through collaborative programs with local nurseries and landscape associations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Turfgrasses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Our turfgrass pest management focuses on pests of both golf courses and sod farms, in response to local and national problems. We work to develop biological methods for managing major turfgrass insect pests economically, with minimal impact on the environment. Assistance with lawn care questions is available through our gardening and environmental hotline<\/a>, a service provided through the URI Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We work with agencies, businesses and researchers throughout New England to increase use of native plants in landscaping, particularly in low maintenance locations such as roadsides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We help local businesses and the general public through the development of new techniques to reduce the effects of turfgrass management on the environment.<\/p><\/div><\/div> A comprehensive education program that provides a solid understanding of a range of horticultural science topics, and approaches to environmentally-friendly landscape management and gardening<\/p><\/div><\/div> Our researchers work through the URI Cooperative Extension to help local growers identify, monitor and manage pest problems in ways that are both economically and environmentally sustainable.<\/p><\/div><\/div> Instructors from the Department of Plant Sciences and Entomology participate in Invasive Plant Management Trainings through the URI Cooperative Extension.<\/p><\/div><\/div> Our instructors work with the Cooperative Extension to help educate local communities in environmentally-sound gardening practices through the dissemination of factual, research-based information.<\/p><\/div><\/div> A license is required in Rhode Island for commercial use of General Use Pesticides.
