The program culminates with written and oral comprehensive exams and completion of dissertation research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66666%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A doctoral dissertation must be completed to graduate from the program.&nbsp; If you enter without a Master\u2019s degree in Psychology you will complete a Master\u2019s thesis prior to the doctoral dissertation. All Ph.D. students must demonstrate research competency. This can be done by having a previously completed Master\u2019s thesis reviewed and accepted by the your committee or completing a research competency project.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33333%\"><section class=\"cl-wrapper cl-boxout-wrapper\"><div class=\"cl-boxout  \">\n<a class=\"cl-button  block-level prominent\" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/psychology\/academics\/course-descriptions\/\" title=\"Course Descriptions\">Course Descriptions<\/a>\n\n<a class=\"cl-button  block-level prominent\" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/psychology\/student-resources\/graduate\/#behavioral-science-phd\" title=\"Student Resources\">Student Resources<\/a>\n\n<a class=\"cl-button  \" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/psychology\/academics\/ph-d-program\/behavioral-science\/learning-outcomes\/\" title=\"Learning Outcomes\">Learning Outcomes<\/a>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In the pursuit of your degree, you will develop expertise in five major areas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Foundations of psychology<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Research methodology and data analysis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advanced psychological knowledge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Multicultural competence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Research proficiency<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Foundations of Psychology<\/strong>&nbsp;(4 courses, 12 credits)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>PSY 600 Multicultural Issues in Psychology: Theory, Research, and Practice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PSY 601 Physiological Psychology<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PSY 603 Development<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PSY 604 Cognitive Psychology<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PSY 605 Personality<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PSY 606 Social Psychology<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PSY 607 Advanced Psychopathology<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PSY 608 Theories and Systems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Research Methodology and Data Analysis<\/strong> (3 courses, 9 credits)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>PSY 532 Experimental Design<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PSY 533 Advanced Quantitative Methods in Psychology<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PSY 611 Methods of Psychological Research and Experimental Design<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Advanced Knowledge<\/strong> (Written and Oral Comprehensive Exams)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Advanced knowledge is demonstrated by passing written and oral comprehensive examinations. Written exams are typically taken in the third or fourth year, and address methodological issues, specialty area(s), and general core knowledge. Areas on which the examination will focus are determined in consultation with the your committee.
