URI Honors Student Produces Documentary on Cape Verde Fisheries

Ali Sandler ’13, a new graduate of the Honors Program, traveled to Cape Verde last summer through the URI Cape Verde Summer Program led by URI faculty. Ali’s studies at URI focused on film media and writing and rhetoric. While in Cape Verde, she captured video footage that she used to produce a video on the fisheries and fishermen of Cape Verde. The video was the main project for two of her senior courses, “AAF 390: Directed Study: Documentary Film Production of the Fishing Industry and Environmental Sustainability” and “AAF 300: The History, Politics, and Culture of Cape Verde.” In the documentary, Ali sheds light on some of the problems facing the fishing industry. She hopes to continue creating documentaries that will contribute to positive social change.
