For example, forests keep toxic levels of carbon out of the atmosphere and help to control flooding and erosion. The region has experienced a significant increase in flooding and heavy rains as well. Climate data show these temperature and rainfall patterns will continue to worsen over time. An engaging <a href=\"https:\/\/usfs.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/MapSeries\/index.html?appid=a4babe8e2fe849739171e6824930459e\">story map developed by the USDA Forest Service <\/a>provides more information on climate changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Rhode Island, the <a href=\"https:\/\/climatechange.ri.gov\/resilient-rhody\">2018 Statewide Climate Resilience Action Strategy<\/a> identified forests as a natural system that provides crucial services to communities and recommended that Rhode Island protect remaining forests and support healthy forest management practices. The <a href=\"https:\/\/dem.ri.gov\/natural-resources-bureau\/agriculture-and-forest-environment\/forest-environment\/forestry-info-0\">2020 Rhode Island Forest Action Plan<\/a> explains how climate change is increasing stress on Rhode Island forests.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specific climate-related risks identified by the USDA Forest Service include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Increased drought<\/li><li>Increased stress from pests and diseases<\/li><li>More competition from invasive plants<\/li><li>Loss of forest habitat<\/li><li>Loss of native plant and animal species (including pollinators and migrating species)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These climate change-induced threats are putting additional stress on our forests and affecting the health of forest ecosystems and the many species that rely on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Forests are widely recognized for their critical importance in helping mitigate and buffer climate change.
