He then spent a year as a research technician in the multiple-melanoma research program at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, in Boston. \u201cIt was an amazing year.<\/p><\/div><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"cl-wrapper cl-dcard-wrapper\"><a class=\"cl-dcard  \" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/riinbre\/surf-testimonial-john-rhoat\/\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1497\/Nicolas-DaSilva.jpghttps:\/\/web.uri.edu\/riinbre\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1497\/John-Rhoat.jpg\" srcset=\"\" alt=\"\"><div class=\"cl-dcard-text\"><h2>John Rhoat<\/h2><p><strong>(CCRI SURF \u2192 URI BS \u2192 Amgen)<\/strong>  John participated in the RI-INBRE SURF Program under Dr. DeBoef (2013). John transferred to URI (2013), participated in the SURF program (2015) again with Dr. DeBoef, and earned a B.S in Chemical Engineering (2017) with a 3.81\/4.0 GPA. He was recruited by Toray Plastics New Product Development Division directly out of URI, and is now a Manufacturing Associate in Purification at Amgen (West Greenwich, RI).<\/p><\/div><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"cl-wrapper cl-dcard-wrapper\"><a class=\"cl-dcard  \" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/riinbre\/2019\/06\/06\/surf-testimonials-dr-dioscaris-garcia\/\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1497\/Dioscaris-Garcia.jpg\" srcset=\"\" alt=\"\"><div class=\"cl-dcard-text\"><h2>Dr. Dioscaris Garcia<\/h2><p>Dr. Dioscaris Garcia (SURF \u2192 PhD \u2192 SURF Mentor) was a recipient of the DiMaio Scholarship (2001) and USDA\u2019s Opportunity Scholarship (2002) when he was an undergraduate at URI. He was one of the first recipients of a full-tuition scholarship to URI through the U.S. Department of Agriculture\u2019s Multicultural Scholars Program. \u201cThat scholarship was the driving force in my academic life.\u201d In 2003, he got one of his first experiences in an academic research laboratory via the RI-INBRE SURF Program, where he worked in Dr. David Rowley\u2019s laboratory.<\/p><\/div><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"cl-wrapper cl-dcard-wrapper\"><a class=\"cl-dcard  \" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/riinbre\/2019\/06\/18\/surf-testimonials-katherine-walsh\/\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1497\/SURF-Katherine-Walsh-Ph.D.jpeg\" srcset=\"\" alt=\"\"><div class=\"cl-dcard-text\"><h2>Dr. Katherine Walsh<\/h2><p>The time that I spent working in Fr. Austriaco's lab provided me with the skills and confidence I needed to pursue my graduate studies. During this time, I presented a poster of my research at an INBRE meeting (the first time I had presented my research in such a forum), and this experience helped solidify my desire to become a member of the scientific community.<\/p><\/div><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"cl-wrapper cl-dcard-wrapper\"><a class=\"cl-dcard  \" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/riinbre\/2019\/06\/18\/surf-testimonials-toyosi-akanji\/\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1497\/SURF-Toyosi-Akanji-SRU.jpg\" srcset=\"\" alt=\"\"><div class=\"cl-dcard-text\"><h2>Toyosi Akanji<\/h2><p>Doing undergraduate research under Dr. Meschwitz gave me the unique opportunity to find my passion for research. The experience gave me the confidence to work independently and to solve real world issues using science.
