Sessions were run by the conference organizers.<br \/>\n<strong style=\"font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\"><br \/>\nSeveral opportunities existed for trainees to earn c<\/strong><strong style=\"font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\">ash awards related to their Lightning Talk.<br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\">Two types of awards were issued in each of the three trainees* categories. A total of six awards were issued for the selected trainees who present during the Lightning Talk Session. Each award was for $500.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><em><strong>*<\/strong>Trainee categories:<\/em> <\/span><em>undergraduate students, graduate students, and&nbsp;postdoctoral scholars.<\/em><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The two types of awards were sponsored by:<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #339966\"><strong style=\"font-size: 20px\">NERIC\/NAIPI <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px\">(The National Association of IDeA Principal Investigators) and<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #339966\"><strong>DRIVEN<\/strong><\/span> (<\/span>The Northeast&#8217;s New Biomedical Accelerator Hub)<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left\"><strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><br \/>\nLightning Talk Evaluation Criteria<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\"><strong><span style=\"color: #339966\">\u2018Best NERIC\/NAIPI Lightning Talk\u2019<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong>Oral presentation style: Talk is clear, concise, easy to understand, and impact of research is well stated.<br \/>\nSlide quality: Slide(s) are simple, aesthetically pleasing, and easy to follow.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\"><strong><span style=\"color: #339966\">\u2018Best DRIVEN Translational Research Talk\u2019 Criteria<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong>The possibility that your research could improve the lives of patients is the primary reason that society supports and funds academic research. Winners will be selected based upon the potential impact of the work (ability to address an important unmet medical need), and the probability that this impact will be realized (scientific rigor and ability to persuade and inspire).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>Host: <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/riinbre\/samantha-meenach\/\">Samantha Meenach, PhD, RI-INBRE Training Director<\/a> (RI)<\/em><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Lightning Talk Awardees and honorable mentions<br \/>\n<\/strong>Twelve Lightning Talk Awards were presented to undergraduate and graduate students, and postdoctoral scholars by NERIC\/NAIPI (The National Association of IDeA Principal Investigators) and DRIVEN (The Northeast\u2019s New Biomedical Accelerator Hub). Six additional individuals received honorable mentions. Emma said <i>\u201cThe [v-NERIC] format was very conducive to attending a multitude of talks from keynote speakers and students alike. I really enjoyed listening to the other undergraduate presentations.\u201d <\/i>Emma recently received the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowdoin.edu\/student-fellowships\/academic-year-research-project\/grua-oconnell\/index.html\">Grua-O&#8217;Connell Research Award<\/a> from Bowdoin College to continue her work with early life adversity and DNA methylation.&nbsp;<br \/>\n<i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-31334 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1497\/Elizabeth-Billings-LT-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\"><strong>Elizabeth B. Elizabeth is a URI MARC U*STAR trainee who works in Dr. Ying Zhang\u2019s lab. She studies metabolic function in benthic foraminifera, microbial protists that inhabit the chemocline, using bioinformatic techniques to analyze RNA data and explore how these organisms are able to thrive in harsh oxygen and nutrient conditions. Liz\u2019s LT was based on her MARC Summer Research Experience with Dr. Fabian Rivera-Ch\u00e1vez at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics. Liz also presented her summer research with Dr. Rivera-Ch\u00e1vez at the 2021 Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) and applied to Ph.D. programs in Cell and Molecular Biology and Microbiology.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-31099 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1497\/Arvin_Soepriatna-300x267.jpg\" alt=\"Image courtesy of Arvin Soepriatna\" width=\"300\" height=\"267\"><strong>Arvin H. Soepriatna, Ph.D.&nbsp;<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>AHA Postdoctoral Fellow<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Brown University<br \/>\nCoulombe Lab for Heart Regeneration<br \/>\nSchool of Engineering<br \/>\n<\/strong>Arvin is an American Heart Association Postdoctoral Fellow (since April 2021) at Brown University.
