Elsawa is an Associate Professor of Immunology at the University of New Hampshire. She received her Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences\/Immunology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and performed her postdoctoral research at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Dr. Elsawa\u2019s research is focused on understanding the regulation of inflammation in the tumor microenvironment (TME) and how that promotes malignant B cell growth, survival and IgM secretion. The Elsawa lab is interested in Waldenstr\u00f6m macroglobulinemia (WM), a rare form of B cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma characterized by overproduction of a monoclonal IgM protein in patient sera. This IgM protein is associated with significant symptoms in patients. Currently WM remains an incurable disease. Dr. Elsawa and her team have contributed to our understanding of the role of the TME in WM biology. Specifically, the team has identified a novel role for the transcription factor GLI2 in modulating both malignant B cells and bone marrow stromal cells in the TME. Dr. Elsawa has received funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the International Waldenstr\u00f6m macroglobulinemia foundation and the Leukemia &amp; Lymphoma Society.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sherine F.
