Joseph&#8217;s research examined STI Prevalence among men who have sex with men aged 55+. Leszczynski is enrolled in the Master of Public Health program at Brown and plans on pursuing research that align with his research interests in infectious disease epidemiology and LGBTQIA+ healthcare. Joseph shared, <em>\u201cThe INBRE program gave me support throughout undergraduate and graduate research, providing key resources and mentorship opportunities that guided me through both projects.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Three-time <strong>RI-INBRE<\/strong> research fellow (&#8216;<strong>20 SURF, &#8216;<\/strong><strong>21 SURF+, &#8217;23 Bridge)<\/strong> <strong style=\"font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\">Jameson Pommenville <\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\">performed his undergraduate research in polymer chemistry at Rhode Island College, mentored by <\/span><strong style=\"font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\">Dr.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-34675\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/riinbre\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1497\/Pommenville-Jameson_Bridge-2023-400x400-1-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/riinbre\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1497\/Pommenville-Jameson_Bridge-2023-400x400-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/riinbre\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1497\/Pommenville-Jameson_Bridge-2023-400x400-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/riinbre\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1497\/Pommenville-Jameson_Bridge-2023-400x400-1-364x364.jpg 364w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/riinbre\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1497\/Pommenville-Jameson_Bridge-2023-400x400-1.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>Elizabeth Kiesewetter<\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\">, and presented his findings at several RI Summer Undergraduate Research Symposiums that included his honors thesis entitled \u201cComputational Analysis and Synthesis of Functionalized Monomers with Applications in Drug Delivery\u201d.&nbsp; He was also President of the RIC\u2019s Physical Sciences Club and a very popular department peer tutor. <\/span><em style=\"font-size: 20px\">&#8220;The research experiences provided to me as an undergraduate through RI-INBRE were fundamental in establishing my career as a researcher. SURF funding has allowed me to explore and find a passion for conducting research, and the Bridge to Graduate Fellowship provided me the invaluable experience to dive head-first into graduate-level research prior to the start of my Chemistry Ph.D. program. I am extremely grateful for the financial and professional support that I have received&nbsp;through the RI-INBRE grants over the years!&#8221;<\/em>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\">This summer, Jameson worked in <\/span><strong style=\"font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\">Dr. Benjamin McDonald<\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\"><span style=\"font-family: Charter, Georgia, serif;font-size: 20px\">\u2019s lab at Brown University and this fall will join Brown\u2019s PhD Chemistry program. Dr. McDonald shared, <em>&#8220;Hosting Jameson as a summer fellow was a pleasure. He adapted to the new environment remarkably quickly and was able to identify new chemistry that our group is excited to follow-up on. The <strong>Bridge to Graduate Fellowship program<\/strong> is a valuable opportunity for students to gain confidence in their abilities and smoothly transition to graduate school.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>2023 Winter Update<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Giovannia Barbosa<\/strong> received the Outstanding Poster Presentation award from the<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-33273\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/riinbre\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1497\/Giovannia-Barbosa-370x370-1-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/riinbre\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1497\/Giovannia-Barbosa-370x370-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/riinbre\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1497\/Giovannia-Barbosa-370x370-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/riinbre\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1497\/Giovannia-Barbosa-370x370-1-364x364.jpg 364w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/riinbre\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1497\/Giovannia-Barbosa-370x370-1.jpg 370w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/> Division of Chemical Toxicology in August 2022, for her research poster \u201cEffect of nucleosome occupancy on base excision repair.\u201d Congratulations! Gio completed her Research Proposal Defense in March 2022 and officially became a Ph.D. candidate in Chemistry working in <strong>Dr. Sarah Delaney<\/strong>\u2019s lab researching Chemistry and Biology of DNA Repair at Brown University. Barbosa was a RI-INBRE Bridge to Graduate School Fellow in Delaney\u2019s lab the summer following the completion of her B.S. degree in Chemistry from Rhode Island College (2020). She was also a SURF student in <strong>Dr. Karen Almeida<\/strong>\u2019s lab at Rhode Island College in 2018.<\/p>\n<h3>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<h3><strong>2022 Bridge Fellows&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This year two students participated in our Bridge to Graduate School program, which provides summer research support for previous RI-INBRE SURF students to complete research projects the summer before they start graduate school at the University of Rhode Island or Brown University.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Miguel Martinez Guzman<\/strong> participated in SURF in 2020 and 2021 at Rhode Island College under the mentorship of <strong>Dr. William Holmes<\/strong>. This summer Miguel performed research with <strong>Dr. Sarah Delaney<\/strong> at Brown University, where he will attend in the fall to pursue his Ph.D. in Biochemistry.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Alan Ardito<\/strong> participated in the 2021 SURF program at the University of Rhode Island<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-32676\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1497\/2022-0729-URI-Ardito-Alan-750x450-1-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/riinbre\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1497\/2022-0729-URI-Ardito-Alan-750x450-1-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/riinbre\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1497\/2022-0729-URI-Ardito-Alan-750x450-1-364x218.jpg 364w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/riinbre\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1497\/2022-0729-URI-Ardito-Alan-750x450-1-500x300.jpg 500w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/riinbre\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1497\/2022-0729-URI-Ardito-Alan-750x450-1.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/> under the mentorship of <strong>Dr. Niall Howlett<\/strong>. Alan continued his research at the University of Rhode Island this summer with Dr. Howlett.
