As the public\u2019s trust in science decline, efforts to establish and enhance research and its impact on society are needed. The Rhode Island Network for Excellence in Science & Technology<\/strong> (RI-NEST), funded through the U.S. National Science Foundation, offers a critical platform for building the state\u2019s research ecosystem and connecting all those in academia, industry, and community to develop use-inspired<\/a>, transdisciplinary<\/a> research that serves all Rhode Islanders.<\/p>\n

On Friday, October 17<\/strong> at Rhode Island College<\/a>, RI-NEST will convene leaders from institutions of higher education to discuss how best to conceptualize and coordinate research and innovation that contribute to economic and societal growth in Rhode Island. Attendees will discuss how to support the State of Rhode Island in its development of a new Science and Technology Plan, including:<\/p>\n

  1. Increasing<\/strong><\/em> investment in science and research from public and private sources.<\/li>\n
  2. Integrating<\/strong><\/em> workforce development initiatives statewide to ensure student achievement in STEAM fields.<\/li>\n
  3. Fostering<\/strong><\/em> deeper civic engagement with public audiences among all those participating in scientific endeavors through creative science communication and knowledge exchange.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    RI-NEST Goals<\/h1>

    Strengthen<\/b> workforce development by broadening opportunities for research and education, which in turn creates pathways to careers in tech and research industries.                                            <\/p>\n

    Catalyze<\/b> partnerships by seeding diverse and use-inspired research, focusing on small businesses that increase competitiveness in Rhode Island’s Blue Economy and retain STEAM graduates from state institutions of higher education.<\/p>\n

    Implement<\/b> opportunities for science communication, visualization, and data sharing to improve translation of science for understanding and use by a broad spectrum of partners, and increase funding into the state.<\/p>\n
