{"id":10488,"date":"2015-12-04T14:32:58","date_gmt":"2015-12-04T19:32:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/rinsfepscor\/?p=10488"},"modified":"2015-12-04T14:32:58","modified_gmt":"2015-12-04T19:32:58","slug":"surf-ri-2016-call-for-mentors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/rinsfepscor\/2015\/12\/04\/surf-ri-2016-call-for-mentors\/","title":{"rendered":"SURF RI 2016: Call for mentors"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/848\/DSC_02732.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[10488]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10493 size-full\" title=\"David Taylor, Roger Williams University, and his SURF students drag a seine net through the waters of the Taunton River.\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/848\/DSC_02732.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0273\" width=\"640\" height=\"246\" \/><\/a>Rhode Island NSF EPSCoR is now accepting mentor applications for the 2016 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program, which will run from Monday, May 23, through the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/surfconference\/\">9th Annual RI SURF Conference<\/a> Friday, July 29.<\/p>\n<p>Currently entering its tenth year, the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/rinsfepscor\/surf\/\" target=\"_blank\">EPSCoR SURF program<\/a>, in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/inbre\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rhode Island NIH INBRE<\/a>, provides valuable training and career development for undergraduates with\u00a0opportunities to\u00a0engage\u00a0in full-time, independent research during\u00a0the summer.\u00a0Students earn fellowship awards through a competitive application process, which will begin in late January 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2007, Rhode Island NSF EPSCoR has supported more than\u00a0250 SURF fellows under the mentorship of more than 80 different faculty members at all nine <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/rinsfepscor\/about-2\/\">EPSCoR partner institutions<\/a>.\u00a0The SURF program also provides workshops on leadership and communication to help students build the skills needed for successful careers. Students wrap up their work with a poster conference that showcases their accomplishments.<\/p>\n<p>The key to a successful program rests on\u00a0having dedicated mentors who can give SURF students\u00a0outstanding research experiences.
