Salve’s Josh Jeudy gets ready to share his SURF research poster at the annual conference this past July.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

When he was six years old, Salve Regina junior Joshua Jeudy<\/strong> moved from Bridgeport, Conn., with his parents back to their home, Akra, Ghana. Upon returning, he noticed a stark difference in the perception of science among Ghanaians and Americans.<\/p>\n

\u201cHere, we appreciate it but don\u2019t cling to it,\u201d explained Jeudy. \u201cBack in Ghana, you hold onto it really tight and don\u2019t let go because it will get you somewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jeudy worked alongside Dr. Bernard Munge<\/strong>, professor and chair of chemistry at Salve, and fellow SURF Issaiah Burch<\/strong> to develop devices which can detect chemicals in sea water. The pair learned about the field of \u2018microfluidics,\u2019 or the study of fluid movements at sub-milimeter scales, discovering how to use electrical currents to test the sensitivity of devices being developed by RI C-AIM.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have been becoming familiar with the equipment and lab etiquette, getting to know other students as well,\u201d said Burch about his first few weeks on the job.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust in the field alone, I have learned physical, analytical, electrical, organic chemistry\u2014all different things I haven\u2019t even taken yet,\u201d added Jeudy. \u201cYou run into error, but it is the good kind of error because you are doing something that no one has thought to do.<\/p>\n

“There is nobody watching over you telling you to do that at this time. It has to get done or we are not moving forward with the experiment. You have to learn how to manage your time.\u201dJoshua Jeudy, 2018 SURF<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jeudy described the microfluidic device as something similar to a glucose meter, but instead of testing blood for sugar levels, it is a tool which can determine how much nitrate or phosphate is in a particular water sample.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like a GPS tracking phosphate and nitrate levels continuously through time in the ocean.\u201d<\/p>\n

Burch and Jeudy both gave high praise to Munge for his expertise in chemical engineering and guidance as an educator.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never thought that electrical chemistry would be interesting, but Munge makes it interesting and fun,\u201d said Burch. \u201cHe wants our aspirations and goals to become a reality.\u201d<\/p>\n

The SURF students understood, however, that conducting long-term research requires a high level of self-reliance.<\/p>\n

Both students intend continue a career path in scientific research. Burch, although he does not know where, wants to study chemistry at the graduate level.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen things start moving forward, I want to put a mattress in this lab and live in here,\u201d he laughed. \u201cI want to get my foot in the door of the scientific community.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jeudy, who has spent the last five years working as an emergency medical technician, wants to continue his own already active research on the effects of alcohol on human anatomy.<\/p>\n
