{"id":3321,"date":"2013-12-16T07:53:15","date_gmt":"2013-12-16T12:53:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/rinsfepscor\/?p=3321"},"modified":"2013-12-16T07:53:15","modified_gmt":"2013-12-16T12:53:15","slug":"the-sea-floor-as-weve-never-seen-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/rinsfepscor\/2013\/12\/16\/the-sea-floor-as-weve-never-seen-it\/","title":{"rendered":"The sea floor as we&#8217;ve never seen it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Robotic systems are taking ocean exploration to new depths, collecting data and mapping the sea floor with high levels of precision that have never existed.<\/p>\n<p>The public will have a chance to hear about this exciting new frontier Wednesday, Dec. 18, from Professor Chris Roman of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gso.uri.edu\/\">University of Rhode Island\u2019s Graduate School of Oceanography<\/a> (GSO).<\/p>\n<p>Hosted by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brown.edu\/\">Brown University<\/a>\u2019s Humanity Centered Robotics Initiative, Dr. Roman will talk about \u201cThrowing Robots in the Ocean: An Overview of Current Research Projects Using Robotic Platforms and Sensing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The presentation will be held from 12-1:30 p.m. in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brown.edu\/Facilities\/Facilities_Management\/maps\/index.php?query=BH#building\/BH\">Barus and Holley Room 190<\/a>. It is part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/cs.brown.edu\/news\/2013\/09\/03\/hcri-speaker-series\/\">HCRI\u2019s Multidisciplinary Speaker Series<\/a> that showcases diverse and groundbreaking research undertaken by leaders in science, technology, design, and impact of robotics on society.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Roman\u2019s talk will focus on some of the GSO current projects currently underway that are related to sea floor mapping and water column sensing. The research group has developed new tools for mapping the sea floor at high resolution and combing different sensors to create hybrid data products.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Roman specializes in underwater imaging and mapping systems.
