{"id":4971,"date":"2014-03-17T09:46:14","date_gmt":"2014-03-17T13:46:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/rinsfepscor\/?p=4971"},"modified":"2014-03-17T09:46:14","modified_gmt":"2014-03-17T13:46:14","slug":"bringing-students-into-the-stem-pipeline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/rinsfepscor\/2014\/03\/17\/bringing-students-into-the-stem-pipeline\/","title":{"rendered":"Students step into the STEM pipeline and beyond"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/848\/photo2-e1395066390189.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[4971]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4980 size-full alignnone\" title=\"Warwick Vets High School science department head Ken Kurkoski illustrates a point to students during a lab experiment at CCRI.\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/848\/photo2-e1395066390189.jpg\" alt=\"students conduct biotech lab experiment\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4982 size-full alignnone\" title=\"Warwick Vets teacher Dr. Caroline Savery assists one of her students during a hands-on science experience provided by Rhode Island NSF EPSCoR.\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/848\/photo4-e1395066475149.jpg\" alt=\"Learning about biotech through hands-on science\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>EPSCoR experience explores and opens doors to biotech, higher education<\/h4>\n<p>Give high school students hands-on\u00a0experiences and make their classroom learning relatable to real life, and suddenly science becomes accessible, interesting and possibly a job choice.<\/p>\n<p>Granted, this is not a novel or flashy approach, but as one collaborative pilot program is proving, it is one that works.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKids are starting to realize it\u2019s a viable area to go into for a career,\u201d said Ken Kurkoski, Warwick Veterans High School science department head. \u201cThey\u2019re seeing that they can stay in Rhode Island and be gainfully employed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4979 size-full\" title=\"Warwick Vets students go through the biotech steps to purify green fluorescent protein.\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/848\/photo1-e1395068951747.jpg\" alt=\"Students experiment in the lab\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/>As Kurkoski talked, a group of his students started working their way through the steps of a Biotech Crash Course in the lab of Community College of Rhode Island Assistant Professor Scott Warila.<\/p>\n<p>Kurkoski partners with Warila and Tim Pelletier, outreach and education coordinator for Rhode Island NSF Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR), to provide the experience for the Warwick Vets students, mostly juniors and a few seniors.<\/p>\n<p>All of the students are enrolled in the school\u2019s Biotech Academy, which Kurkoski launched nearly four years ago at the urging of Warwick Vets Principal Gerald Habershaw. The academy is a cross-curricular approach that engages English and social studies along with the science.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reading in English tends to focus on science \u2014 Brave New World, Frankenstein \u2014 and explores ethical dilemmas,\u201d Kurkoski explained. \u201cIn social studies, they look at the American legal system,court cases on bioethics and other concerns in the field.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the crash course, Warila led the students, spread out among lab tables, through an actual biopharmaceutical manufacturing process designed for a two-hour lab, with some of the steps prepared in advance. But for the students, the experience was both new and real.<\/p>\n<p>Caroline Savery, who teaches chemistry and biotechnology at Warwick Vets, worked with the students, moving from table to table and engaging with the lab partners.<\/p>\n<p>From her vantage point, she said the experience held incredible value and enhanced the classroom curriculum: \u201cThey get exposure in a hands-on, direct application of the science. It gets them excited about learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The purifying process<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5003 size-full\" style=\"font-size: 13px\" title=\"Purifying process\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/848\/photo6-e1402059362345.jpg\" alt=\"column chromotography\" width=\"200\" height=\"336\" \/><\/h3>\n<p>In addition to leveraging relationships to make the experience happen, Rhode Island NSF EPSCoR also provides some of the equipment and supplies that allow students to put into practice the upstream and downstream biotech processes, which normally take days, in just a few hours.<\/p>\n<p>Warila explained, \u201cGreen fluorescent protein (GFP) is a great protein to use in education. The students can visually track it during the entire lab and enhance their understanding of each step of the process. The steps performed would be very similar in industry with most protein products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The upstream process involves transformation, where a gene of interest, in this case GFP, is inserted into a host cell (E. coli) and grown up in large quantities in cell cultures. \u00a0This creates large numbers of cells that are producing\u00a0GFP, the target protein.<\/p>\n<p>For the downstream process, where the product is harvested and purified, the students\u00a0recovered the GFP by breaking open the cells (known as lysis) and then separating the two using a centrifuge.<\/p>\n<p>Guided by Warila, the students employed column chromatography (a purifying method), which strongly binds the product to a column filled with a special resin to attract only the GFP.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the non-target proteins simply washed away, leaving the students to use a solution to pull the product back off the column in a highly purified state.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Making science real<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4983 size-full\" title=\"CCRI professor Scott Warila works with Warwick Vets students during a biotech lab as they learn the upstream and downstream procedures.\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/848\/photo5-e1395067106901.jpg\" alt=\"CCRI professor Scott Warila works with students in lab\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Principal Habershaw said\u00a0he saw the value of the biotech experience through the work of his wife, Dr. Beth Anne Zielinski-Habershaw, who teaches bioengineering at Brown University<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew from my wife that biotechnology was a fast-growing field, that jobs were going to be prevalent in the state of Rhode Island,\u201d Habershaw said. \u201cAnd, if kids needed certain skills to work in these jobs, we could give them the opportunity through a biotech academy to become employable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joining forces with Pelletier and Rhode Island NSF EPSCoR, Habershaw\u2019s vision has become a reality.<\/p>\n<p>The first year, about 15 students signed up for the academy, which is designed for students in 11<sup>th<\/sup> and 12<sup>th<\/sup> grades. This year, there are 18 juniors alone and more than 20 students are signed up for next year. The current group of seniors is the academy\u2019s third graduating class.<\/p>\n<p>Pelletier said the Hands-on Science Experience aimed high: \u201cWe want to provide a college level program \u2014\u00a0the skills are taught by qualified staff with industry experience and use cutting edge equipment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kurkoski said the program\u2019s growth was directly related to its success. Students see the accomplishments and advances of their peers in the classes ahead of them. And, through the Rhode Island NSF EPSCoR partnership, students get a taste of opportunities in higher education along with exposure to a biotech career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lab they\u2019re doing today,\u201d Kurkoski noted, \u201cwe don\u2019t have the wherewithal to do in school. It\u2019s also a great opportunity to get them in front of the type of person who is going to teach them at college.
