{"id":5190,"date":"2014-04-09T14:22:39","date_gmt":"2014-04-09T18:22:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/rinsfepscor\/?p=5190"},"modified":"2014-04-09T14:22:39","modified_gmt":"2014-04-09T18:22:39","slug":"metcalf-scicomm-features-nyt-journalist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/rinsfepscor\/2014\/04\/09\/metcalf-scicomm-features-nyt-journalist\/","title":{"rendered":"Metcalf SciComm features NYT journalist"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><b>Luncheon event to focus on challenges of communicating scientific uncertainty,\u00a0<\/b><b>especially in the context of climate change<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>The University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.metcalfinstitute.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Metcalf Institute<\/a>\u00a0will hold a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/metcalfinstitute.org\/training\/scicommexchange\/\" target=\"_blank\">SciComm Exchange for Rhode Island researchers<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0<b>Wednesday,\u00a0April 16, 2014, from 12 &#8211; 1 p.m. at URI\u2019s Carothers Library in Kingston, RI.\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0The one-hour lunchtime session will feature Cornelia Dean, New York Times science journalist and distinguished lecturer and writer-in-residence at Brown University.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/s\/C7WRL95\" target=\"_blank\">Register here<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Metcalf Institute\u2019s SciComm Exchanges, supported by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/rinsfepscor\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rhode Island NSF Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research<\/a>\u00a0(EPSCoR), are part of an ongoing effort to help Rhode Island research faculty, staff, and graduate students strengthen their communication skills through informal conversations with their peers and communication experts.<\/p>\n<p>Cornelia Dean will share her perspectives on the challenges researchers face when communicating scientific uncertainty, especially in the context of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>The SciComm Exchange series comes as news organizations and the public digest the latest reports from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/ar5\/\" target=\"_blank\">Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 5th Assessment Report<\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0Researchers will be encouraged to discuss these issues and Dean\u2019s insights through informal exchanges with their colleagues at the\u00a0April 16 lunchtime program.<\/p>\n<p>The SciComm Exchange is open to all faculty, research staff and graduate students from colleges or universities in Rhode Island. \u00a0Lunch is included and registration is free, but space is limited, so participants should\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/s\/C7WRL95\" target=\"_blank\">register here by April 14<\/a><b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>About Metcalf Institute<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>The University of Rhode Island\u2019s Metcalf Institute is an internationally recognized leader in providing environmental science training for journalists.
