{"id":6066,"date":"2014-10-09T16:39:46","date_gmt":"2014-10-09T20:39:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/rinsfepscor\/?p=6066"},"modified":"2014-10-09T16:39:46","modified_gmt":"2014-10-09T20:39:46","slug":"training-with-track-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/rinsfepscor\/2014\/10\/09\/training-with-track-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Hands-on training with Rhode Island EPSCoR Track-2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-10230\" title=\"On site research\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/848\/At-Baileys-Brook-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"Baileys Brook sampling\" width=\"365\" height=\"273\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Watershed project provides experience, builds skills<\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/newrnet.org\/\">North East Water Resources Network<\/a> (NEWRnet) project\u00a0offers\u00a0on an unparalleled opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to gain valuable lab and field\u00a0experience under the guidance of\u00a0faculty mentors as they develop research protocol in several emerging fields.\u00a0(<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/rinsfepscor\/2014\/11\/21\/paid-summer-intern-opportunities-with-newrnet\/\">Check out internship opportunities for Summer\u00a02015<\/a><\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-10231\" title=\"Macroinvertebrate samples\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/848\/Counting-bugs-300x188.jpg\" alt=\"Macroinvertebrate samples\" width=\"367\" height=\"229\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From\u00a0maintaining high tech\u00a0sensors to\u00a0taking water and macroinvertebrate samples, analyzing data, developing computational\u00a0models, creating land use maps, and doing\u00a0GIS mapping work, students participate in the latest\u00a0watershed research methods and enhance professional skills through relevant workshops and conferences.<\/p>\n<p>Matt Wallace began working with the NEWRnet\u00a0project\u00a0in the fall of 2013 as he headed into his last year of the University of Rhode Island\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/cels-gradprograms\/mesm\/\">Master of Environmental Science and Management (MESM) program<\/a>. Two months after earning his degree the following spring of 2014, Wallace took\u00a0an environmental consulting job with Roux Associates, Woburn, Mass.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6119\" title=\"Science poster design workshop\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/848\/IMG_2063-245x300.jpg\" alt=\"science poster design\" width=\"350\" height=\"429\" \/><br \/>\nWallace said the extensive lab and fieldwork provided by\u00a0the Track-2 research paid off: \u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s important to have experience \u2014\u00a0it was a big selling point to get interviews and get my job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zoe Moskwa and Meaghan Senack, both <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salve.edu\/\">Salve Regina University<\/a> students pursuing an\u00a0Environmental Studies major and Biology minor, found their summer internship provided not only the development of\u00a0skills and a deeper understanding of research methods, but the experience also opened up new fields of study and career tracks they had not considered.<\/p>\n<p>Working with the social science team, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/enre\/\">URI\u00a0Environmental Economics<\/a> major Kellie Brown\u00a0spent her summer investigating\u00a0non-point source pollution, taking field trips to the watersheds, and building site profiles.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-10232\" title=\"Professional skills\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/848\/Kellie-Brown-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"GIS mapping\" width=\"350\" height=\"261\" \/>Interns from the three states gathered in Delaware twice, first at the beginning of the summer for a short course, where presentations by NEWRnet faculty introduced students to climate change in the northeast, experimental economics, and water quality issues faced in the region. They reconvened at the University of Delaware in August to present their research.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/848\/Track-2-student-training.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[6066]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-10234\" title=\"Talent development\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/848\/Track-2-student-training-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"talent development\" width=\"350\" height=\"261\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe Track-2\u00a0interns also had the opportunity to engage with other Rhode Island EPSCoR interns conducting summer research projects.
