{"id":7379,"date":"2015-04-02T13:31:04","date_gmt":"2015-04-02T17:31:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/rinsfepscor\/?p=7379"},"modified":"2015-04-02T13:31:04","modified_gmt":"2015-04-02T17:31:04","slug":"former-ri-students-awarded-nsf-fellowships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/rinsfepscor\/2015\/04\/02\/former-ri-students-awarded-nsf-fellowships\/","title":{"rendered":"Former RI students awarded NSF fellowships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Students who attended\u00a0RI NSF EPSCoR partner institutions Brown University, Rhode Island College and the University of Rhode Island as undergraduates are among the outstanding young scientists awarded a prestigious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsfgrfp.org\">Graduate Research Fellowship<\/a> from the National Science Foundation (NSF).<\/p>\n<p>The NSF awarded the GRF to 2,000 individuals from a pool of 16,500 applicants in 2015.\u00a0The recipients represent a diverse group of scientific disciplines and come from all states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. commonwealths and territories.\u00a0Since 1952, NSF has provided fellowships to individuals selected early in their graduate careers based on their demonstrated potential for significant achievements in science and engineering.<\/p>\n<p>GRF awardee Shelby Rinehart, who earned her undergraduate degree at URI, got an early start on her research work <a href=\"\/\/www.uri.edu\/news\/releases\/?id=5916\">when she studied harmful algal blooms<\/a> in Narragansett Bay with RI NSF EPSCoR Principal Investigator Carol Thornber.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the list of awardees with undergraduate degrees from Rhode Island institutions:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brown University<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jay Dow Young: Engineering \u2014 Mechanical<\/li>\n<li>Justin Wolfe: Chemistry \u2014 Chemistry of Life Processes<\/li>\n<li>Alejo Maximilliano Stark: Physics and Astronomy \u2014 Astronomyand Astrophysics<\/li>\n<li>Manvir Singh: Social Sciences \u2014 Biological Anthropology<\/li>\n<li>Guillaume Riesen: Psychology \u2014 Cognitive Neuroscience<\/li>\n<li>Abigail Plummer: Physics and Astronomy \u2014 Condensed MatterPhysics<\/li>\n<li>Hieu Thuong Nguyen: Engineering \u2014Bioengineering<\/li>\n<li>Eli Moss: Life Sciences \u2014 Genetics<\/li>\n<li>Brent Donald Lunghino: Geosciences \u2014 Marine Geology andGeophysics<\/li>\n<li>Nadia Leonard: Chemistry \u2014 Chemical Catalysis<\/li>\n<li>Allison E.
