{"id":7623,"date":"2015-05-21T21:25:21","date_gmt":"2015-05-22T01:25:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/rinsfepscor\/?p=7623"},"modified":"2015-05-21T21:25:21","modified_gmt":"2015-05-22T01:25:21","slug":"undergrads-selected-for-summer-research-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/rinsfepscor\/2015\/05\/21\/undergrads-selected-for-summer-research-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Undergrads selected for summer research program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The academic year has come to a close, but 39 students from Rhode Island&#8217;s <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5702\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/848\/critique-e1405424694683.jpg\" alt=\"critique\" width=\"325\" height=\"243\" \/> institutions of higher education\u00a0will continue their learning and discovery with the Rhode Island NSF EPSCoR Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program.<\/p>\n<p>Students earn their fellowship awards through a competitive application process and spend 10 weeks engaged in full-time, independent research projects in the laboratory of a faculty mentor.<\/p>\n<p>The summer research experience \u2014 a collaboration between Rhode Island NSF EPSCoR and\u00a0Rhode Island IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence\u00a0\u2014\u00a0provides opportunities\u00a0for\u00a0a deeper\u00a0involvement in the science\u00a0while advancing\u00a0technical and cognitive skills.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/848\/M00111021.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[7623]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-9758\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/848\/M00111021-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"SURF 2015 aquaculture trip\" width=\"325\" height=\"244\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019m excited to see the work these students accomplish over the summer,&#8221; said Jim Lemire, RI NSF EPSCoR coordinator for undergraduate research. &#8220;For some of them, it will be\u00a0their first true foray into scientific investigation. For others, they will be advancing previous work. But, for all of them, this summer promises to bring unexpected challenges, great successes, and, most importantly, an opportunity to be scientists.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Click on this link\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/848\/RI-EPSCoR-2015.pdf\">SURF 2015<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 to read about the students and their research projects.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2007, Rhode Island NSF EPSCoR has supported 215 SURF fellows under the mentorship of 76 different faculty members at our partner institutions.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the research experience, the SURF program also provides workshops on leadership and communication skills.
