{"id":8108,"date":"2015-07-20T09:03:51","date_gmt":"2015-07-20T13:03:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/rinsfepscor\/?p=8108"},"modified":"2015-07-20T09:03:51","modified_gmt":"2015-07-20T13:03:51","slug":"surfs-up-rhode-island-undergrads-in-research-14","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/rinsfepscor\/2015\/07\/20\/surfs-up-rhode-island-undergrads-in-research-14\/","title":{"rendered":"SURF&#8217;s up 2015: Rhode Island undergrads in research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8103 size-full\" title=\"Drew Phelan works in the Reid lab at Bryant University\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/848\/DSC_0005.jpg\" alt=\"Drew Phelan\" width=\"426\" height=\"640\" \/>Research fellow: <\/strong>Drew Phelan<br \/>\n<strong>Hometown: <\/strong>Foxborough, MA<br \/>\n<strong>Major: <\/strong>Biology<br \/>\n<strong>School: <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bryant.edu\/admissions\/?gclid=CO_-ndDg6cYCFUWPHwodP6sJUg\">Bryant University<\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Mentor: <\/strong>Christopher Reid<br \/>\n<strong>Project: <\/strong>Effect of legacy pollutants on microbial communities in Narragansett Bay watershed<\/p>\n<p>Last summer, Drew Phalen, who will graduate in the spring with a degree in biology, worked on a <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/rinsfepscor\/surf\/\">Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship<\/a> (SURF) Lyme disease project with the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/inbre\/\">Rhode Island IDeA Network for Biomedical Research Excellence<\/a> (INBRE).<\/p>\n<p>This summer, with the Rhode Island NSF EPSCoR side of the SURF program, Phelan is helping investigate how levels of toxicity from heavy metals and petrochemicals change life in the Narragansett Bay watershed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is completely new to me,\u201d Phelan said. \u201cI didn\u2019t have any experience in the environmental sciences. I didn\u2019t know how interconnected everything was \u2014 that it\u2019s not just tree hugging, but you look at at bacteria, the water, the patterns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Phelan is working in the lab of Assistant Professor Christopher Reid, biochemistry, who mentors undergraduates in SURF projects for both RI NSF EPSCoR and RI-INBRE.<\/p>\n<p>Through Reid\u2019s EPSCoR project this summer, Phelan said she was conducting a lot of PCR, or polymerase chain reaction, to amplify DNA extracted from Providence River sediment samples. Once amplified, the DNA gets sent to the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/gsc\/\">Rhode Island Genomics and Sequencing Center<\/a>, a RI EPSCoR core facility, at the <a href=\"http:\/\/ww2.uri.edu\">University of Rhode Island<\/a> for sequencing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Providence River is an urban estuary,\u201d explained Phelan. \u201cSome of the sites along side it used to be shipyards, so there are a lot of petrochemicals and legacy pollutant runoff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And yet, she said, the researchers are finding shovelfuls of clams every time they dig a hole.
