Keep it planted and mulched.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Soil erosion is a concern not only for its impacts on plant growth, but also for its impacts to water quality. \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\">Soil is a valuable natural resource that nourishes and supports plant growth among many other things. When soil is left bare and exposed, wind and water can erode it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Sediments that are transported to storm drains and surface waters can choke aquatic life and increase water temperatures. Various pollutants such as bacteria, nutrients and heavy metals may also be attached to these sediments, further degrading water quality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small\">You can reduce soil erosion by:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\">Maintaining a healthy, perennial plant cover.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\">Mulching.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/covercrops.cals.cornell.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Planting a cover crop<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 such as winter rye in vegetable gardens. Includes annual grasses, small grains, legumes and other types of vegetation planted to provide a\u00a0temporary vegetative cover. Cover crops are often tilled under serving also as a \u201cgreen manure\u201d crop.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\">Placing crushed stone, wood chips, and other similar materials in heavily used areas where vegetation is hard to establish and maintain.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Using other \u00a0erosion controls that include the use of geo-textile materials or other methods such as sodding or hydroseeding that result in the establishment of permanent cover. \u00a0These methods work well on steep slopes and heavy traffic areas.
