Condensed tannins (CT), also called proanthocyanidins, are naturally occurring plant compounds that significantly affect the nutritional value of forage by forming complexes with proteins, carbohydrates and minerals.<\/p>\n<p>Birdsfoot trefoil (<i>Lotus corniculatus L.<\/i>) has recently been identified as a promising CT forage well suited to Northeast growing conditions.\u00a0 It is a legume that minimizes bloat, improves protein uptake and has other environmental benefits in addition to possible anti-parasitic effects.\u00a0 Other promising CT legume forages include Sanfoin (more suited to western U.S.) and Sericea lespedeza (does not over-winter well in colder climates).<\/p>\n<p>[box style=&#8221;light-yellow shadow&#8221; ]<\/p>\n<h5>URI Research<\/h5>\n<p>URI is conducting research to evaluate Birdsfoot trefoil, and its potential anti-parasitic and nutritional effects in small ruminants.\u00a0 Visit current and recent projects on this topic.<\/p>\n<p>Sept. 2018 &#8211; Aug. 2021:\u00a0 <strong>USDA NIFA Organic Transitions Program<\/strong> project entitled, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/sheepngoat\/orgbft\/\"><em>Overcoming barriers to transitioning small ruminants to organic production:\u00a0 Effects of feeding birdsfoot trefoil on parasite control, nutritional status &amp; profitability<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sept. 2012 &#8211; August 2017:\u00a0 <strong>USDA NIFA Organic Research and Extension Initiative<\/strong> project entitled, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/sheepngoat\/orei\/\"><em>Forage-based Parasite Control in Sheep and Goats In the Northeast U.S.<\/em> <\/a><\/p>\n<p><i>Lead URI researchers:<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u00a0Rebecca Brown, Ph.D. &#8211; <a href=\"mailto:brownreb@uri.edu\">brownreb@uri.edu<br \/>\n<\/a>Dept.
