menu-item-5454\"><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/smile\/mentor\/\">Become a Mentor<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul><\/nav><\/section>\n\n\n\n<p>Each fall, over 500 4th through 12th grade SMILE students are engaged in hands-on engineering curricula. &nbsp;While each level has different, age-appropriate activities, the focus of all of them is to allow the students to feel like engineers by using the engineering design process throughout the semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students are exposed to several engineering disciplines and career options along the way: from structural and mechanical to electrical and chemical. &nbsp;The young engineers are challenged to <strong><em>ask<\/em><\/strong> what the problem is, <strong><em>imagine<\/em><\/strong> some solutions, <strong><em>plan<\/em><\/strong> a design and materials list,<strong><em> create<\/em><\/strong> their design, and <em><strong>improve<\/strong><\/em> it, whether it was a failure or a success!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns
