The legislation also called for the protecting the religious use of peyote, protecting the religious rights of Native American prisoners, and restoring the “compelling state interest test” as the legal standard for protecting Native religious freedoms.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
<\/td>\nChafee Amendment to Gaming in Rhode Island (1996-1997), regarding the Narragansett Indian tribe’s challenge to Senator Chafee’s legislation amending the Rhode Island Indian Claims Settlement Act (1978). The amendment would require the tribe to get state and local voter approval before establishing a high-stakes gambling business.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
