Students are currently producing a podcast to raise wider awareness of these subjects&#8211;stay tuned!<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>SSIREP Fellows Produce Online Guide for Trauma-Informed Teaching<\/h3>\n<p><em>Thanks to a gift from a donor, URI\u2019s Social Science Institute for Research, Education, and Policy (SSIREP) created the Public Policy Lab, where faculty and students partner with local governments and nonprofit organizations to improve community services and better the lives of Rhode Islanders through applied policy projects. Whereas students must often work low wage jobs to complete their education, this endowment creates opportunities for them to conduct paid research fellowships under the mentorship of a faculty supervisor. At the Public Policy Lab, students apply their studies toward the development of graduate-level professional skills while working as part of a team to contribute meaningfully to their community.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;At SSIREP\u2019s Public Policy Lab, a project team joined the Rhode Island Trauma-Sensitive Education Collaborative (RITSEC) to develop an online mini-curriculum designed to provide educators throughout the state with resources to help them support students experiencing traumatic conditions such as entering the foster system, foster relocation, homelessness, and food insecurity. The team was led by Dr. Diane Kern (School of Education) with students Jova Trochez, Caroline Kennedy, and Tyrone Thomas. Students are also currently producing a podcast to raise awareness on these subjects.<\/p>\n<p>Under Dr. Kern\u2019s leadership, students gathered and organized resources into a set of five self-guided web modules designed to improve RI educators\u2019 understanding of both the traumas themselves as well as trauma-informed teaching strategies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf a child has autism and doesn\u2019t communicate the same way as others, that\u2019s something that has to be factored in. Trauma creates similar obstacles,\u201d says Dr. Kern. \u201c[There are a] lot of people dealing with the issue of unstable housing in this little state\u2026 We\u2019re denying access to education in disproportionate ways when we suspend a first grader for trauma-response behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jova Trochez has now begun his career as a high school English teacher. Although COVID-19 has kept him out of an in-person classroom, he says the research has already informed his approach to teaching. \u201cIt\u2019s shocking to learn how many kids have to deal with issues that you wouldn\u2019t really think about as you\u2019re teaching them. Because a kid\u2019s not going to come up to you during a lesson and say, \u2018I live in a car.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo now, if a student tells me they\u2019re having an issue&#8211;you can\u2019t have your camera on? That\u2019s fine, even if you\u2019re lying to me and your camera actually works,\u201d Trochez said. \u201cThere\u2019s probably a reason. I don\u2019t know what they go through in their lives, I can\u2019t. But I can be understanding and give them the space that they need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline Kennedy was able to gain research experience not normally part of the curriculum. \u201cPersonally, I didn\u2019t have much experience with research beyond writing papers for class and stuff like that,\u201d she said. \u201cOut of this, I learned methods to broaden my horizons and find resources that I would use in my classroom.\u201d Kennedy is a Secondary Education major in her Junior year.<\/p>\n<p>Trochez took on a more unexpected challenge. \u201cI hadn\u2019t used a web design program before&#8230;\u201d he said. \u201cWe knew we had to get it out to people in a form that was accessible and easy to read.
