Her research focuses on how PFAS and other environmental contaminants affect liver function, metabolism, and related health outcomes, including metabolic disorders and fatty liver disease.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jill S. Oxley, MD, FACS<\/strong> \u2013 Breast surgeon and Director of Breast Care Services at Cape Cod Healthcare. Her clinical work focuses on breast cancer, benign breast disease, and high-risk screening and risk assessment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Moderator: Laurel Schaider, PhD<\/strong> \u2013 (Moderator)- Senior Scientist at Silent Spring Institute and lead STEEP researcher. STEEP researchers and Tribal leaders will share insights from ongoing collaborations\u2014including fish and shellfish testing, community surveys, youth science programs, and outreach events\u2014designed to balance traditional lifeways such as fishing, hunting, and food gathering with strategies to reduce PFAS exposure. Responsible for leading Tribal efforts in fish and wildlife restoration, habitat protection, food sovereignty, and water resource management, with a focus on ensuring Tribal voices are included in regional environmental decision-making.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><strong>Emily Diamond, PhD<\/strong> \u2014 Associate Professor, Communication Studies &amp; Marine Affairs, University of Rhode Island. Focuses on how communication and identity influence public responses to environmental issues. Leads STEEP\u2019s Tribal engagement work including designing risk communication and coordinating community outreach.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><strong>Laurel Schaider, PhD (Moderator)<\/strong> \u2014 Senior Scientist, Silent Spring Institute &amp; Lead Researcher, STEEP. Mark Ells, Barnstable Town Manager, will discuss local government strategies to mitigate PFAS in Cape Cod\u2019s water resources and protect public health. This will be a moderated discussion followed by a Q&amp;A session.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Featured Speakers:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Heidi Pickard is a Lead Consultant at Ramboll<\/strong> with over a decade of experience researching PFAS. She recently completed a PhD and postdoctoral fellowship in Environmental Engineering at Harvard and was a former STEEP trainee. Her research focused on how human-released contaminants affect ecosystems and expertise includes fate and transport, environmental forensics.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mark Ells is the Town Manager of Barnstable, MA<\/strong>, with nearly 30 years of experience in local government. He began his career in the Department of Public Works, later serving as Director and then Assistant Town Manager before stepping into his current leadership role.
