{"id":15082,"date":"2023-04-03T13:48:28","date_gmt":"2023-04-03T17:48:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/studentsenate-draft\/?page_id=15082"},"modified":"2024-04-18T13:10:35","modified_gmt":"2024-04-18T17:10:35","slug":"how-to-hold-elections-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/studentsenate\/how-to-hold-elections-2\/","title":{"rendered":"How to hold elections"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Election Process<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are forming a new student organization, you must elect:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>President, Vice President,&nbsp;Secretary, Treasurer&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New groups&nbsp;<strong>must hold elections<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong><em>PRIOR<\/em>&nbsp;<\/strong>to submitting an application for recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All current groups seeking re-recognition\u00a0<strong>must hold elections<\/strong>\u00a0and report the results\u00a0<strong>prior to to April 1st each year<\/strong>.  <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><em>New clubs<\/em> also must hold elections<\/strong><\/span>, and the results may be reported to SOC Chair throughout the year on a rolling basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Section A.<\/strong> All elections for officers and for committee chairpersons shall be decided by majority vote of the full membership and shall be conducted by secret ballot. Write-in votes shall be permitted on the ballot and shall be deemed valid if the intent to vote for a specific candidate for a specific position is clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Section B.<\/strong> Any voting member may nominate any undergraduate student, currently in good academic standing, for any office or elected position. In the case of regular elections, nominations shall be opened at the last regular meeting before the annual meeting and shall be closed at the annual meeting. In the case of an election to fill a vacancy, nominations shall be opened at the first regular membership meeting after the vacancy occurs and shall be closed at the next regular membership meeting thereafter<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Section C<\/strong>. Immediately upon the close of nominations, an election shall be held. If any election has only one candidate, that person must still face election by ballot, and shall be liable to defeat by write-in votes. If no candidate receives a majority on the first ballot there shall be no election and the ballot shall be repeated as many times as is necessary until a candidate is elected by majority. Each ballot after the first shall include the name of all nominees who do not themselves withdraw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Need More Information?
