{"id":7054,"date":"2017-09-18T10:38:39","date_gmt":"2017-09-18T14:38:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/studentsenate\/?p=7054"},"modified":"2017-09-18T10:38:39","modified_gmt":"2017-09-18T14:38:39","slug":"academic-9-13-17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/studentsenate\/academic-9-13-17\/","title":{"rendered":"Academic 9-13-17"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>MEETING START TIME:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> 5:35<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>ATTENDANCE:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Committee:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Chairman Temple, Vice-Chair Morabito, Senator Benedict, Senator Darche, Senator Murray, Senator Needle, Senator Nelson, Senator Sardinha, Senator Vu<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Absent:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Non-Committee:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Senator Alquirtas, CIO Taylor<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>DISCUSSION: <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Liaisons<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Did everyone get the email Chairman Temple sent out in regards to College Liaisons? &#8211; Yes<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Other Liaisons that are not College Liaisons<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You will be asked if you want to continue being the Liaison<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If not please let Chairman Temple know what position you were and your meeting time and location<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Indigenous People\u2019s Day<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chairman St. Amand and Chairman Temple have been working on a bill<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Changing Columbus Day to Indigenous People\u2019s day and celebrating those who were here first<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Committee is on board with this idea<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Feelings were felt that some students at the University would try to fight this<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Referenced the survey conducted last year showing how this is going to be expected<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We have talked to those involved with diversity and different groups on campus<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We have not president Dooley due to accessibility<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We were attempting to contact the club NATO, however they are no longer a club on this campus<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That does not mean that we still should not make this change<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Possibly one more email should to go out to get one more round of opinions?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Next steps (assuming that the bill passes on the floor):<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We then take it to the Faculty Academic Calendar Committee<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Will not take into affect until 2019 on the calendar<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We can still have an event this year to start things off<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Plan to build on that event every year<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">OER (Open Educational Resources)<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chairman Temple met with Affordable Course Material Taskforce and made note on how there is a big thing for OER on October the fourth, it is targeting non-professors<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Is anyone interested in attending this event? It is from 9am-11am<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Talk to your professors and any and all faculty you know about going to this event<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">OER stands for Open Educational Resources, it is not trying to control what textbook professors use, instead it pushes for noncommercial forms of information (i.e. packets, papers)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Certificate for OER Professors, should we continue doing it<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Professors seemed to appreciate it and they would display it, thus spreading the word further<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We should continue to do this<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Faculty Senate<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Faculty senate will be on September 21st from 3pm-5pm in Beaupre<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Who wants to be on faculty committees?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Student Handbook<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Equity<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Classroom Steering committee<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Someone approached Chairman Temple about changing the student handbook<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They were not a senator, but that is ok as it affects everyone and they do not have to be a senator to make change<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chairman Temple will be in the office at 10 in the morning about this<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Engineering Students<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">No engineering buildings, they have to take shuttles, very inconvenienced<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Why is there an engineering fee if students are going through this much trouble<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fee is for the equipment they are using<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That kind of change would take months, maybe even years<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It has to be us if we want change, faculty will not do it<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nursing Students<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Parking is a 20 min walk all the way to the building where classes are held<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are supposed to be three shuttles running at once, however there is allegedly only one running<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The one shuttle is made to fit around 20 people but there is 115 URI students that would need to utilize it<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The shuttle runs every 30 min<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brown has a LOT of shuttles and they don\u2019t even have students going, it is only faculty<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They don\u2019t match up shuttles to when classes come out<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">RIPTA has forgotten to pick students up<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shuttles do not have a set schedule<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Find out when the last class is and when the last shuttle is, if there is only one that is not good enough<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students were told that if they missed the last shuttle or RIPTA and were stuck, that they would have to have people pick them up or to take a train and walk to another RIPTA<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students were not happy<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maybe work with Brown and Rick about a group shuttle<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Parking garage next to building is ONLY for faculty<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do not know if there are extra spots that are not being used<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Little to no one is even taking the shuttle due to it\u2019s poor system<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There is a question of if it is even running anymore<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students were told that they HAVE to have a car when they go into clinical<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is not taking into account those that do not have a car and\/or cannot afford a car<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students were given the wrong parking pass originally<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students were forced to pay \u00a0to park<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They have to pay for an extra parking pass<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do any students get prioritized, brown vs rick vs URI?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Not to our knowledge<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">URI commuter passes should cover parking on the street but there are no available spots due to construction<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How many students are at the providence campus?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Just academics, no residents<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">OMBUD<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">OMBUD wants us to know if at any moment in meeting with dean if you are coming across anything that is not good treatment at student bring it to Senator Benedict &#8211; say on floor<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Should we bring ALL complaints to OMBUD or just some<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bring all to Senator Bennedict and she will filter it<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Email the assistant of the College Dean if they are not responding<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If they do not respond beyond that notify Senator Benedict so she can notify the OMBUD<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The student body as a whole should know about OMBUD and Senator Benedict<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Flyers were put in the senate office directing people to Senator Benedict<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Senator Benedict is going to hold office hours to help advertise herself and offer her services<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Academic Committee could possibly hold an advertising campaign for OMBUD<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>MEETING ADJOURNMENT TIME: <\/b><span
