{"id":7764,"date":"2017-11-17T11:26:21","date_gmt":"2017-11-17T16:26:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/studentsenate\/?p=7764"},"modified":"2017-11-17T11:26:21","modified_gmt":"2017-11-17T16:26:21","slug":"cultural-10-23-17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/studentsenate\/cultural-10-23-17\/","title":{"rendered":"Cultural 10-23-17"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>CULTURAL COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 October 23<sup>rd<\/sup>, 2017<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Chair: St. Amand<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Committee Members Present: Creese, Kohl, McWeeney<\/p>\n<p>Committee Members Absent: Vu, Ndayishmiye<\/p>\n<p>Non-Committee Members: George Gallien, director of MSSC<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Meeting Start Time: 5:06PM<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>-Nicolette presented on what cultural committee historically does<\/p>\n<p>\u00e0people tend to think \u201carts and crafts-y\u201d but trying to get more cultural programming done<\/p>\n<p>\u00e0Ace of Cakes<\/p>\n<p>\u00e0Spirit of Giving<\/p>\n<p>\u00e0Rhody Paws<\/p>\n<p>\u00e0hopefully put on monthly diversity events<\/p>\n<p>-i.e. \u201cwhat is privilege?\u201d event for October last Monday<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\">George Gallien\n<ul>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\">discussed former programming events MSSC has sponsored<\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\">two events this week: \u201cJane the Virgin\u201d and \u201cCultural Mixer\u201d<\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\">interested in co-programming with Providence campus<\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\">hopefully getting speakers for MLK celebration in February<\/li>\n<li class=\"minutes_text\">co-sponsoring Kwanzaa celebration in December<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00e0Counseling Center<\/p>\n<p>\u00e0Mental Health Awareness<\/p>\n<p>\u00e0Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness<\/p>\n<p>-resources we can use for programming<\/p>\n<p>-future plans<\/p>\n<p>\u00e0Mental Health Awareness WEEK<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>-assign liaisons to certain centers on campus i.e. multicultural center, counseling center, etc.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e0try to have monthly meetings<\/p>\n<p>*reaching out to have more new senators on cultural committee (kind of small right now L)<\/p>\n<p>*each committee member present was assigned to a certain center<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>-explained accessibility challenge<\/p>\n<p>\u00e0feedback on: simulated or walking around with faculty\/staff\/students (similar to safety and lighting walk) to different points of campus to see, for example, \u201cif I was in a wheelchair could I access this building?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00e0George Gallien: talked about inviting disabled people to get first-hand opinions<\/p>\n<p>\u00e0*getting more opinions on if we should physically go around campus or just simulate the activity<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>-next month: Native American History Month<\/p>\n<p>\u00e0start compiling ideas?
