And if you do, you can either&nbsp;<b>get tick bitten<\/b>, or you can&nbsp;<b>Get TickSmart<\/b>! Getting TickSmart means knowing and using &#8220;best practice&#8221; strategies to prevent tick bites&#8230; because the only way to get a tickborne disease is to be bitten by a tick.<\/p>\n<p>This spring, we talked with hundreds of kids before starting an interactive&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/tickencounter\/store\/learning-kit\/\">Do A Daily TickCheck learning exercise<\/a>, and asked these kindergarten through 4th graders to&nbsp;<strong>tell us &#8220;one thing you already know about ticks.&#8221;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Almost all knew something!&nbsp;<b>Did you know:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1713\/PostItNotes-Ticks_Web_01.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[12402]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12414 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1713\/PostItNotes-Ticks_Web_01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"268\" height=\"300\"><\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>1. &#8220;Ticks can hurt&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 20px\">But did you also know that along with anti-blood clotting chemicals, tick saliva contains potent painkillers, transforming ticks into stealth blood-suckers. They bite&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/b>What can you say&#8230; Ticks Bite!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1713\/PostItNotes-Ticks_Web_03.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[12402]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-12420 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1713\/PostItNotes-Ticks_Web_03.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"341\" height=\"300\"><\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>3. &#8220;Ticks bite you and live in the woods; ticks are a bloodsucking pest that can infest a house&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/b>Some ticks (like deer ticks) live in the woods, and some (like brown dog ticks) can infest houses. That&#8217;s one reason why it&#8217;s important to be able to tell different types of ticks apart.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1713\/PostItNotes-Ticks_Web_04.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[12402]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-12423 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1713\/PostItNotes-Ticks_Web_04.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"330\" height=\"279\"><\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>4. &#8220;They bite people and anamals; ticks go on pepl&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 20px\">Ticks mostly feed on wildlife and pets but when tick populations become over-abundant, they can spill-over onto&#8230; people.<\/span><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1713\/PostItNotes-Ticks_Web_05.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[12402]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-12438 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1713\/PostItNotes-Ticks_Web_05.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"316\" height=\"381\"><\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>5. &#8220;they cant fly so they crawl up at your feet; they climb in your pants&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/b>Ticks don&#8217;t fly, they don&#8217;t jump, they don&#8217;t fall out of trees! They do latch on and crawl up&#8230; and yes, sometimes they climb in your pants, biting \u201csecretly\u201d and &#8220;below the belt.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1713\/PostItNotes-Ticks_Web_06.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[12402]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-12441 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1713\/PostItNotes-Ticks_Web_06.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"321\"><\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>6. &#8220;tick suck blood &amp; they can be all sorts of sizes; ticks suck blood&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 20px\">Ticks suck blood; that&#8217;s how the larvae grow to become nymphs, and how nymphs grow into adults. And it&#8217;s that monster blood meal adult female ticks take that gives them all the protein they need to mature their eggs\u2014all 2,000 or more of them!<\/span><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1713\/PostItNotes-Ticks_Web_07.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[12402]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-12444 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1713\/PostItNotes-Ticks_Web_07.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"301\" height=\"308\"><\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>7. &#8220;only deer tick can give you lime disease; if deer tics bite you there is a chace you could get lime disease.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 20px\">Different types of ticks carry germs that can cause different diseases; deer ticks and their look-alike cousins living on the west coast of America, and in Europe, Asia, and Russia, are the only type that transmit the bacteria causing Lyme disease.<\/span><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1713\/PostItNotes-Ticks_Web_08.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[12402]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-12447 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1713\/PostItNotes-Ticks_Web_08.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"301\" height=\"353\"><\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>8. &#8220;They have to stay on you for 24 hours to get Lime disese; If Deer tics bite you there is a chace you could get lime disease.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 20px\">Many disease-causing germs carried by ticks are not transmitted right away. They have to invade the tick salivary gland first, where they contaminate the saliva that a tick \u201cspits\u201d into its host. The good news is that the delay usually gives you a whole day to find the tick and remove it\u2014and that can prevent a whole lot of disease.<\/span><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1713\/PostItNotes-Ticks_Web_11.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[12402]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12453 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1713\/PostItNotes-Ticks_Web_11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"303\" height=\"338\"><\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>9. &#8220;get big rashess&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 20px\">Tick bites may produce \u201clittle\u201d rashes (size of nickel or dime). If a deer tick transmits the Lyme bacteria, that little rash could turn into a whopper. That&#8217;s when it&#8217;s time to see your primary care provider.<\/span><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1713\/PostItNotes-Ticks_Web_10.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[12402]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-12411 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1713\/PostItNotes-Ticks_Web_10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"298\" height=\"311\"><\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>10. &#8220;The make you very sick &amp; maybe die&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 20px\">The germs ticks transmit can cause terrible diseases, and (rarely) in some severe cases, people do die. Larvae are about the size of a grain of salt and have 6 legs. Nymphs the size of a poppy seed on a bagel have 8 legs.
