Dr. Arun Shukla is the Simon Ostrach Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Rhode Island and a co-founder and inaugural co-director of the National Institute for Undersea Vehicle Technology. Internationally recognized for his pioneering contributions to experimental mechanics, impact dynamics, shock physics, and fluid-structure interactions, Dr. Shukla has built a distinguished career marked by scientific innovation, academic leadership, and exceptional mentorship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Shukla was elected to the European Academy of Sciences and Arts in 2011 and to the Russian Academy of Engineering in 2015. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the American Academy of Mechanics, the Shock Wave Society, and the Society for Experimental Mechanics (SEM). His many honors include ASME’s prestigious Drucker Medal and SEM’s Murray Medal, Taylor Award, Theocaris Award, M.M. Frocht Award for excellence in experimental mechanics education, and the B.J. Lazan Award for outstanding technical contributions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A respected leader within the mechanics community, Dr. Shukla served as President of SEM in 2003 and delivered the Society’s prestigious Murray Lecture in 2011. He also served as Chair of the Applied Mechanics Division of ASME and as Technical Editor of Experimental Mechanics<\/em>. He continues to contribute to the profession through service on the editorial boards of several leading engineering journals. His achievements have been further recognized through numerous distinctions, including the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, the University of Rhode Island Scholarly Excellence Award, and the URI Outstanding Graduate Mentoring Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Throughout his career, Dr. Shukla has held several distinguished visiting appointments, including the Clark Millikan Professorship at the California Institute of Technology, the Satish Dhawan Visiting Chair Professorship at the Indian Institute of Science, and the Distinguished Visiting Professorship at IIT Kanpur. Together with his students and collaborators, he has authored more than 500 refereed journal articles and conference proceedings, 10 books, and four patents, making a profound and enduring impact on the global mechanics and engineering communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Born and educated in India, Dr. Shukla earned his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Maryland, College Park.
