Mar\u00eda Elena Castellanos Gonz\u00e1lez<\/strong> is the principle investigator in integrated watershed and coastal management at the University of Cienfuegos, Center for Environmental Studies of Cienfuegos (CEAC), affiliated with the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Environment of Cuba. Her applied research and teaching at UC focuses on community mobilization and education to foster stewardship of coastal ecosystems. Gonz\u00e1lez is a strong advocate for Cuba\u2019s policy of integrated watershed and coastal resources management. She has worked for many years to advance this approach in the Cienfuegos Bay and its sub-basin through integrated scientific research, public education, and student engagement.<\/p>\nGonzalez holds a master\u2019s degree in ocean management from Dalhousie University, Canada, a second master’s degree in technology and society from the University of Havana, Cuba,\u00a0and a doctorate in education sciences. Her work has been highlighted at several Coastal Zone Canada conferences, as well as the Iberoamerican Network for Integrated Coastal Management (RED IBERMAR in Spanish), a network of Spanish and Portuguese speaking scientists in Spain and Latin American countries focused on integrated coastal management. She has participated in numerous regional conferences and information exchange events in Latin America, the Caribbean, and North America.<\/p>\n
