{"id":1555,"date":"2020-07-12T21:27:26","date_gmt":"2020-07-13T01:27:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/uril\/?page_id=1555"},"modified":"2020-07-12T21:34:12","modified_gmt":"2020-07-13T01:34:12","slug":"baltimore-canyon-9-20-9-24-2020","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/uril\/field-reports\/baltimore-canyon-9-20-9-24-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Baltimore Canyon 9\/20-9\/24\/2020"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We collaborated with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beinartlab.com\/team\">Roxanne Beinart and Corinna Breusing (URI\/GSO)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/anddavies.co.uk\/\">Andrew Davies (URI\/CELS Biological Sciences<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gso.uri.edu\/cnr\/www\/\">Chris Roman (URI\/GSO)<\/a> for a Rhode Island Endeavor Program-funded expedition to collect chemosynthetic mussels at a cold seep site in Baltimore Canyon, USA.&nbsp; Using video-guided benthic grabs, we collected dozens of live, viable specimens. A fiber-optic heave compensated winch system was used to deploy benthic grab sample payloads outfitted with battery-powered equipment, including prototype <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0967063719302821?via%3Dihub\">DEEPi cameras<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">DEEPi video of benthic grab collecting a sample at approx. 400m (video was livestreamed to surface via ethernet\/fiber optic).<\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed oembed-vimeo-com\" style=\"\" data-url=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/437709248\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Successful_DEEPi_grab\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/437709248?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Imaging and sampling payload, shown with 3x DEEPi camera systems connected via wifi (directional antenna) inside a 1-atm housing.&nbsp; Lighting was provided by <a href=\"http:\/\/juicerobotics.com\/\">Juice Robotics<\/a> SiteLites.&nbsp; The
