Volunteers choose the day of the week that is most convenient for them.<\/li>\n<li>The monitoring season extends from late April to October, and generally can not be started mid-season.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Access to a canoe, kayak, or boat is essential for lake and pond monitoring since volunteers must provide the means to get to their monitoring locations, which are typically the deepest part of the lake, or mid-stream for rivers.<\/li>\n<li>Many river and coastal sites do NOT require use of a boat, but require early morning sampling times, typically every other week.<\/li>\n<li>Volunteers do not need any prior experience in water quality monitoring.&nbsp; New volunteers must attend classroom and field training, usually in April.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080\">Monitoring sites&nbsp;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11649 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1667\/PeterCollins-compressed-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/watershedwatch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1667\/PeterCollins-compressed-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/watershedwatch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1667\/PeterCollins-compressed-364x485.jpg 364w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/watershedwatch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1667\/PeterCollins-compressed-500x667.jpg 500w, https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/watershedwatch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1667\/PeterCollins-compressed.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We work with local organizations to identify monitoring sites (<a href=\"https:\/\/experience.arcgis.com\/experience\/e52de787eb5244acb1ea2fa62dcec5c3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">click here<\/a> for a list of our current sites). Our goal is to have a minimum of three sites per watershed or system to get a fuller understanding of impacts to a particular area. We also ask for a commitment of at least three years for new sites (although the people monitoring may change year-to-year) so that weather variations and other natural background \u201cnoise\u201d can be reduced when assessing conditions. These criteria mean that the stream or small pond in your backyard may not be a site for which we are seeking volunteers, but we are happy to discuss it with you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color:
