Child Care Student Assistance FAQs

Q:   Who can apply?

A:    Any matriculated undergraduate student parent taking 6 or more credits can apply, including international students, whether in a degree program or a certificate program.

Q:   Does the childcare provider have to be identified?

A:    Any caregiver, licensed or unlicensed, may be used, but a statement of your child care expenses must be provided in your application.

Q:   What are SAP standards?

A:    A student’s financial aid eligibility is based on satisfactory academic progress (SAP) standards that the University of Rhode Island’s office of Enrollment Services is required by the U.S. Department of Education to establish, publish, and apply.  For more information, see https://web.uri.edu/enrollment/satisfactory-academic-progress-sap/.

Q:   How is the program coordinated?

Q:   How is the level of financial assistance determined?

A:    Applications are ranked according to various need criteria and those most in need are prioritized.  Depending on the number of applications received, not all eligible applicants may be able to receive funding.

Q:  What factors are considered in a family’s financial need profile?

A:    A family’s financial need profile includes such factors as the family’s total taxable and non-taxable income, as well as family size

Q:   Is the award considered taxable income?

A:    No, the funds are included as part of your financial aid package.

Q:   How are the awards paid?

A:    The award is issued upon decision and deposited into the student’s account. You will be notified by phone and email.  If there is tuition owed the University, the award will be credited to that debt, and any remaining balance will be deposited into the student’s account.

Q:   Can I apply more than once?

A:    Yes, you can apply each semester you need financial assistance, though there is no guarantee that you will be funded, as funding is based on availability of funds and the level of need across the application pool for any given semester.

Q:   Can both parents apply at the same time?

A:    No, only one award may be granted per family, even if both parents are URI students
