The most recent University Strategic Plan for 2006 – 2009 reiterates the University’s commitment to “uncompromising integrity, with imagination and pride evident in every aspect of our work.” Thus, the goal of this tutorial, sponsored by the ADVANCE-IT program at the University of Rhode Island, is to provide search committees with the research-based best-practices tools they need to recruit a diverse faculty while demonstrating integrity, imagination, and pride through every step of the process.

In order to do so, and to avoid any misunderstandings, it is necessary to first:

• Offer a disclosure
• Debunk some persistent myths
