Why / Research Rationale |
Use proactive language in the job description to describe your department’s commitment to diversity. The University’s wording of Job Advertisements reflects the following: “URI is an AA/EEO employer and values diversity and also is an NSF ADVANCEinstitutional transformation university, working to advance the careers of women faculty, especially in the science and engineering disciplines”.
Use a wide array of marketing venues for the job announcement, such as minority caucuses in professional organizations, personal contacts, listservs, etc. |
To broaden your applicant pool: Job announcements that include detailed equal employment opportunity (EEO) statements are rated as being higher in organizational attractiveness by women (McNab & Johnston, 2002) and underrepresented candidates (Avery, 2003) than those that include only minimal EEO statements. On the other hand, Whites (Avery, 2003) and males (McNab & Johnston, 2002) are either unaffected or ambivalent, respectively, by the length or detailed nature of EEO statements. Although some majority members may be repelled by diversity statements, they are probably undesirable candidates at an institution – like URI – that is committed to diversity precisely because they are intolerant of it (Avery, 2003; Brown et al., 2002). |
