No Experience Required!
All Necessary Training Provided!
URI EMS members are provided with all the training necessary. Upon joining, members undergo a 90-day probationary member training period. During this time, basic skills training is accomplished and the member becomes familiar with our operations, treatment techniques and medical equipment.
Upon completion of this probationary period, the member will become a certified First Responder. After 60 days, the probationary member may become eligible to start training to become an Emergency Vehicle Operator by learning the operation of the ambulance.
All members are also trained in the federally-recognized National Incident Management System Incident Command System (NIMS-ICS) 100 level and above, OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Awareness level, Hazardous-Materials Awareness level and above and other specialized certification courses.
In addition to the above trainings, we host trainings on various other topics including Response to Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents, Incident Command System, specialized EMS Hazardous Materials response (various levels), Response to Recreational Drug Incidents, Behavioral Emergency Management, Pediatric Trauma Management, among many other topics. Some topics are required for various advancement opportunities.
We have also implemented an extensive driver training program based on federal standards and recommendations for Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) with Ambulances. Senior members are trained as EVOC Instructors (Driver Trainers).
Almost all training is done in-house with a few exceptions. First Responder training is provided at no cost and other trainings are reduced or at no cost when available.
