Radioactive Material Waste Handling

Radioactive waste requires the same safety and security measures similar to radioactive material use. The AU is responsible for the safe, secure, and proper storage of radioactive wastes generated until removed by the radiation safety personnel. Radioactive waste should not be stockpiled in the lab. A radioactive waste area should be located away from heavy traffic or high use areas.

The Radiation Safety Office is responsible for the pickup and disposal of all radioactive wastes from the laboratories unless different prior arrangements have been made with the Radiation Safety Office.
Radioactive waste management including segregation, direct handling, repackaging, and physical disposal will be conducted by trained and authorized personnel only under the direction of the RSO.

For more information, please refer to section 14 of the Radioactive Material Safety Manual, and contact the Radiation Safety Office with any questions.
