The Office for the Advancement of Teaching & Learning (ATL) is pleased to announce the inaugural members of the Faculty Leaders Program. This program is designed to give faculty members the opportunity to serve in a leadership role, working collaboratively with ATL staff, to both advance their professional development and support the advancement of faculty and graduate student instructors across the university.
Faculty Leaders will serve for 2 years, devoting a portion of their time to working with faculty, graduate student instructors, and ATL staff developing professional development resources and delivering workshops within the context of a project scope that aligns with their area of expertise. The Faculty Leaders are eligible for an academic year stipend and additional remuneration is also provided to the selected faculty member’s home department and/or college to cover up to 2 per course instructors per year, as needed, to support a decreased teaching load during the appointment period.
2024 Appointees
Faculty Leader for Inclusive Teaching & Accessibility
Faculty Leader for Graduate and Student Instructor Support
Faculty Leader for Online Education & Instructional Design
Faculty Leader for Student Learning Outcomes Assessment and Accreditation (SLOAA)
Members provide leadership in these four areas:
Graduate Student Instructor Support
The faculty member in this role will assist in developing, leading, and facilitating all the professional development experiences tailored for Graduate Student Instructors across the Office for the Advancement of Teaching & Learning (ATL). As ATL focuses more on providing relevant and robust professional development experiences for URI graduate students who teach in their respective academic departments, it is imperative to our goals to increase the voice of faculty within the work that we create and offer to members of the campus community. The selected faculty member would be responsible for working with staff members across ATL, but specifically with colleagues on our Faculty Development team. Together, the URI faculty member in this role would be supported to facilitate workshops and seminars (both in-person and/or online), as well as author teaching related resources, that focus on preparing graduate students to teach effectively, develop their own teaching philosophies, and incorporate an inclusive approach within their teaching strategies that foster effective and equitable learning for all URI students.
Inclusive Teaching & Accessibility
The faculty member in this role will assist in developing, leading, and facilitating ATL’s efforts to advance effective and modern strategies for equipping and empowering URI faculty to develop inclusive classroom environments, antiracist pedagogy, as well as accessible and equitable frameworks for teaching and learning that benefit all URI students. As ATL seeks to provide more opportunities for faculty to connect, learn, and teach using inclusive and accessible approaches to teaching and learning, it is imperative to our goals to increase the voice of faculty within the work that we create and offer to members of the campus community. The selected faculty member would be responsible for working with staff members across ATL, but specifically members of our Faculty Development team. Together, the URI faculty member in this role would be supported to facilitate workshops and seminars (both in-person and/or online), as well as author teaching related resources that focus on engaging and equipping all members of the URI instructional community in the work of celebrating differences, implementing equitable teaching and learning practices, fostering a growth mindset, and seeking the success of all students that they teach.
Student Learning Outcomes, Assessment, and Accreditation
The faculty member in this role will assist in developing, supporting, and facilitating ATL’s efforts to advance effective and modern strategies for equipping and empowering URI faculty with best practices for implementing, strengthening, and evaluating the use of student learning outcomes in courses, departments, and colleges across URI. As ATL seeks to provide more opportunities for faculty to embrace the power of assessment and consider the importance of self-reflection in evidencing the impact and evolution of their own teaching practice, this opportunity is imperative to our goal to increase the voice of faculty in developing resources to offer to members of the campus community. The selected faculty member would be responsible for working with staff members across ATL, but specifically members of our Student Learning Outcomes, Assessment, and Accreditation team. Together, the URI faculty member in this role would be supported to facilitate workshops (both in-person and/or online), professional development experiences, as well as author web-based resources that focus on equipping and positioning all members of the URI instructional community to harness the power of assessment for their professional growth, and consider the many ways in which both traditional and alternative assessments provide guidance for improved teaching and effective student learning over time.
Blended Learning & Hybrid Pedagogy
The faculty member in this role will develop, lead, and facilitate Office for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning efforts to advance effective and modern strategies for equipping and empowering URI faculty engaged in blended learning and hybrid pedagogy. As ATL focuses on providing consistent and enhanced support for faculty teaching in blended/hybrid modalities, it is imperative to our goals to increase the voice of faculty within the work that we create and offer to members of the campus community. The selected faculty member would be responsible for working with staff members across ATL, but specifically with colleagues on our Online Education and Instructional Design team. Together, the URI faculty member in this role would be supported to develop and facilitate a faculty training program focused on blended pedagogy and design, which would include collaborating closely with faculty on creating and adapting courses for blended offerings by guiding and supporting them on the creation of objectives, sequencing of instruction, use of assessment, and design of course materials through both workshops and one-on-one consultations.
