Inclusive Teaching and Learning Institute (ITALI)

The STEM Education URI (SURI) initiative and ATL team supported faculty designing yearlong projects to implement and evaluate the use of evidence-based teaching methods that foster inclusive learning environments and promote student success in meeting learning outcomes.

Program

In August 2019, ATL hosted a two-day Inclusive Teaching And Learning Institute (ITALI) during which participants (known as ITALI Fellows) designed their project. Fellows’ projects centered around the broad themes of group work, metacognition, and integration of math content with co-enrolled STEM courses.
SURI and ATL supported participants by providing:

  • staff expertise in course, assignment, and assessment design
  • data and analysis
  • undergraduate Learning Assistant (LA) support (as needed)

Ongoing Efforts

ITALI seeks to continue its work by offering continued assistance to Fellows’ follow-up projects, recruiting another cohort of faculty members, and seeking to expand its reach in infusing inclusion into classrooms.
